

Wayne retired from McDonnell Douglas in 1997 after 38 years of dedicated service. In his retirement he enjoyed volunteering at CKL of I, umpiring, family gatherings, and spending time with his beloved wife, Nelda, until she passed in 2013. In the years that followed, he remained devoted to his faith, attending Mass at St. Peter’s Cathedral each week. He also found joy in playing cards at the Moose Lodge (#1221) in Swansea, where he was a longtime member.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years, Nelda (Jenkins) Schmittling, and his youngest son Steven Schmittling.
Wayne is survived by his children, Wayne A. Schmittling, Jr., Elizabeth (Randy) Suchman, and Diane Schmittling (daughter-in-law); grandchildren, Jeremy (Lora) Schmittling, Sarah Schmittling, Ashley (Greg) Dabler, Brandon (Kelly) Suchman, Ross (Krissy) Suchman, Alaina Suchman, Lydia (Cody) Beishir, and Sierra Wood; his great grandchildren, Briley, Oliver, Bryce, Jason, Owen, Ethan and Jack. Wayne is survived by his sisters and brother, Aurelia (Walter) Witkus, Fred (Mary Ann) Schmittling and Marlene Meyer, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation: Friends may call from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 1st, 2025, at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, IL.
Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 1st, 2025, at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Belleville, IL.
Burial will be private at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.
Memorials may be made to Shriners Children’s, St. Louis.
