I stumbled upon Mr Croy’s obituary when I decided to look him up online.  

I did some math and I believe the year was 1973 or 1974.  My parents were not Christians at the time, but they thought it would be good to send their children to church.  The bus ministry with CBC would faithfully stop by our house and pick up four children, of which I was the youngest.  

Mr Croy was my first grade Sunday School teacher.  I remember him being very tall and he was always so kind.  He would use flannel graph to tell us Bible stories.  I remember how he challenged us to learn Psalm 23.  I studied hard to learn this Psalm and I was able to recite it to Mr Croy in Sunday School.   Mr Croy used this as an occasion to reward me for learning God’s word and he and his family would pay my family a visit.  He brought a Tonka truck with him that I dearly loved.  He also used the occasion to witness to my parents.  They were very respectful but they weren’t receptive to the Lord at the time.  Still, Mr Croy was faithful in the Lord’s service.  

Each week in Sunday School, Mr Croy would close in prayer and offer an invitation to know Jesus.  One week I raised my hand.  The Lord had been working in my life and I responded to the gospel call.  Mr Croy pulled me aside and prayed with me.  

We stopped attending CBC when I was 10.  I didn’t have the Christian support network of having saved parents or friends.  I went through a season of rebellion but the Lord turned my heart around in 1989.   

I’ll always be grateful to Mr Croy for faithfully proclaiming the Word of God and I look forward to telling him someday in heaven.  

It’s been a few years since Brother Croy passed away but I’m certain that Mrs Croy and Phyllis still feel the loss.  My condolences to you both but my heart is glad for Mr Croy on a life well lived.  The tributes indicate that he fought the good fight.  My tribute indicates that he heard the words we all long to hear, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

I've been trying to think of a special memory of my Uncle Phil (pronounced Uncle Feel) that hasn't been shared yet, but after reading all of the other memories I realized that Uncle Phil treated everyone the same. He was genuine to the core, which makes him not only my Uncle Phil, but our Uncle Phil.  Most all of the stories I could share have already been told by my sisters or cousins, like our trips to his house to visit, his stories and jokes, how he engaged with my kids, and most importantly, how important Christ was to him. You know, we could never be at his house on a Sunday without going to church, and when he came to visit, he always went to church ...no matter what! I will miss our Uncle Phil tremendously and I am so thankful for the memories that I have of him.

I got to know Phil 40 years ago when I worked on the freighters.  I met Phil and his family when I attended Cleveland Baptist on a Sunday night.  Later when We docked in Cleveland on a Sunday morning I took a taxi to Church Phil and and his wife took me home with them for lunch. Phylis and Paula taught me to play UNO that day.  That was at their old house.  After a wonderful afternoon Phil took me back to the ship.  That day meant a lot to me.  Later Phil and his family came to N.C. for vacation and My wife and I got to visit with them again.   Pat will remember the glider Phil flew in.  Later after the LORD called me to attend Massillon Baptist College my wife and son we were able to spend Thanksgiving with them in 1986.  Thanks Phil and Pat for everything.  Even though I have not scene you for sometime you were real friends to me and I have never forgot what you did for me.  I still remember Paula very well.   May the LORD give you Grace once again for your life.  

I have a fond memory of Uncle Phil coming to visit my brother, sister and my self at my Mom’s parents in Shady Springs WV. We would spend the summer with our Grandparents and he would show up with these giant 3 ft. plastic tubes of sweet and tart powder, pure heaven! I was maybe 5 or 6 yrs. old and I will never forget that memory. It told me a lot about my Uncle Philip and what a wonderful person. God Bless You Aunt Pat, Phyllis and family.

Let me tell you about my uncle Phil... He was a devout Christ-follower, funny but serious, super smart, he never met a stranger, so caring and he would do whatever he could to help you. I have so many memories of him that bring a smile to my face, like packing up our Christmas presents and driving to Ohio to spend Christmas together, going to amusement parks, his jokes, boy did he know a lot of jokes, and I loved listening to him reminisce on his memories of when we were kids ("Uncle Phil, you want some chickin?"  but imagine that being said with an over exaggerated southern drawl).

One of my favorite memories is actually from my wedding when he came into the reception dressed in blue jean overalls, with a black, unruly hair/beard wig combo and a shotgun!! He was introduced as my daddy's long last brother, Zed. HAHA He carried on so well that many of my husband Stan's family congratulated us on the new found family member. haha He was such a cut-up! More importantly, he gave really great hugs and I am going to miss them and him something fierce!

I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is with his Heavenly Father and his loved ones who went before him - Oh what a reunion that must have been! I am sure that if this was Uncle Phil who was sharing his memories of me, he would spend more time telling you of a Savior, Jesus Christ, who loves you so much that He died, was buried and rose again to pay your sin debt and defeat death so you can have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16. "For by grace you are saved, through faith -- not of yourselves, it is a gift from God -- not by works so no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8. What a precious gift ;free to anyone who wants it! 

I love you Uncle Phil and one day I will see you again!

I would like to express my deepest sympathy on Phil's passing.  I had the opportunity to know Phil through his working career at PPG and after his retirement.  He had a love for family and friends and would always extend a hand if needed.  I will miss his smile, his joking manner and the friendship we shared.

Aunt Pat, you are in our thoughts and prayers while you are grieving the loss of Uncle Phil.  He was such a special man with such a huge heart. We had a lot of good memories from when I spent the summer in Ohio. We had a lot of good memories on his fishing boat and at the camp grounds.  I will never forget the time I caught my thumb with a fishing hook and Uncle Phil pulled it out with pliers. 

When I first met Phil he made me feel like a part of the family.  I loved hearing his jokes and his knowledge of the past. I also admired his strong faith and trust in the Lord, no matter what happened in his life.  My favorite memory of Phil was when he wanted to take our son Collin home with him and Pat after Erin’s wedding. 

We love you Aunt Pat, and are continuously praying for you to have peace. We all know Phil is in a much better place than we are and that we will be reunited one day!  We love you!

I remember the boldness of Phil when he was a young Christian.  It was probably 45 years ago I went on a hunting trip with Basil. Phil was with a group of family and friends hunting in that area too.  We visited that evening with Phil’s group, many of them Basil’s and my family. 
My brother-in-law was an atheist and the conversation got into religion.  He mocked when Phil spoke of being saved: “SAVED! How ridiculous.” 
Phil got up and marched into the bedroom and brought his Bible, opened it to a scripture and showed him: “Ye must be born again to enter the kingdom of heaven.”  Phil’s boldness was a powerful evidence that he knew he was privileged to belong to Jesus the Savior.” 
That was a good witness to me  that Phil was not ashamed to profess the Lord to many tough hunters present who were not believers. 
I suppose Phil knows NOW how God used that in many lives, mine included. 
Several years ago I told Phil he talked too much and didn’t give others a chance to talk.... his response was God’s quiet grace and a smile...later after  I said it God convicted me of same. 
Phil is doing better than us now...absent from the body, present with the Lord.  

My thoughts and prayer is with you, Pat, and your family.  God is a very present help in time of trouble....very present!

Phil was one of a kind and he brought a light to our family primarily Milo and Cindy. His laughter and jokiness were contagious and after the last decade of being around our family, Phil finally went to be in a better place. One memory that will forever stick with us was when Milo’s friends were passing away and Phil stated loud and clear that he and Milo were not friends but acquaintances. This was to assure the world that they would both live long healthy lives growing in experiences and going out and doing whatever it is that friends do. God had other plans for this friendship as Phil went home to be with the Lord and Milo is not far away from being united with his best friend. As for us, Phil taught us to live life with a smile, joke around when things get hard, and always praise the Lord for what you have. Jane Gill-Wilson once said “Time waits for no one, Life moves swiftly on...Keep your loved ones close for one day they will be gone.”


Pat and family.  So sorry to hear of Phil's passing. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend. We always laughed at his corny jokes. He had an infectious smile and would never hesitate to offer any help.

We have such wonderful memories of Pat and Phil, after meeting them at church it was like we had known them for many years. Phil always had a funny story to tell, and always with that big smile of his  He liked to refer to me as "his elder" because I was five months older than him. The first thing Vicky said was that she was going to miss her number one Buddy, as we all will, but how sweet it is knowing that we will see him again. I shared 4 years with Phil at Shady Spring High School (SSHS) graduating in 1963.  I recall him as a fun-loving young man who even then never met a stranger.  Although he and I never hung together, I “knew” Phil.  He made sure that I was not a stranger.  A smile and warm greeting was always on his lips for everyone.  We rekindled our relationship in 2003 at our 40th class reunion.  As is typical with most of us, we learn too late in life how much we miss or simply ignore in our youth.  I think Phil had a distinct advantage over most of us as I can now see that he started appreciating each of us for our individual qualities years ago, even in high school.  At our reunion in 2003 and subsequent min-reunions, he invariably would be the one to warmly greet each of the classmates (and spouses) with that wonderful, sincere smile. His infectious smile remained with him till the very end.   I’ve included one of a half dozen photos from our 50th class reunion in 2013. They all have one thing in common.  Phil is present, not sitting in a chair, but moving from table to table, greeting each classmate.  I thank Pat and Phil for their support and encouragement over the years.  I suspect that Phil is now in the process of planning our next reunion.  

Dear Pat:   Betty and I  along with Berean Baptist Church want to tell you how sorry we are in the lost of brother Phil.  You are in our prayers daily.  As pastor I want to tell you how much I appreciate the years Bro. Phil was such a help and blessing to me and to our church.  I know you will miss him greatly,  but we have that wonderful promise Jesus gave to Martha recorded in John 11:19-26.  Then we have the assuring words of Paul in 11 Corinthians 5:6-9. I have a lot of good memories.  I knew Phil for 55+ years.  He was my brother-n-law (a brother I didn't have).  We always had good times when we were together.  It was a joy being with him and family.  When we visited them he would always take us places we had never been before.  Good memories of going fishing on Mosquito Lake with Phil and my mother.  Going 4 wheeling was lots of fun, even though he got lost a lot and we would have to go find him.  He always had a joke or tall tale to tell.  

There was nothing he wouldn't do for me if I ask.  He was caring and given and a great example to others.  He loved the Lord and told anyone that would listen.  I love you brother and I'll miss you.

During my last few years as Executive VP of the Lilly Reunion at Flat Top, WV, Phil would stop by and we would fellowship while sitting under the Pavilion and the music sounded on stage. Then, I would go on stage and sing some of my recorded  songs . These song were a blessing for me to sing and Phil love to hear them. I have prayed for him for awhile now.  One after awhile, we'll continue our fellowship.  THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

Our prayers are with you at your great loss. We have so many wonderful memories of Phil and Pat. They go back at lest 45 years. We raised our girls together. We went to church together. We played rook together many a Friday night. Over the years we cried together and prayed together.  The Lord has been Faithful to both our families and We know He will take care of Phil’s precious family. Till we meet again in Heaven.

Aunt Pat, I have so many fond memories of Uncle Phil. From sitting on your back porch listening to his stories and laughing at his jokes to his warm wishes and advice for me and Greg on our wedding day. Uncle Phil was a special man and will be missed terribly. Some of my favorite memories with Uncle Phil include him taking me to my first dirt track car race. We had so much fun; laughed all night. The time we explored the Winchester Civil War Battlefields. We shared a love of history and could talk for hours about it.  I remember each time I drove from college to visit, he and I would discuss all of my history classes. One visit, he surprised me and gave me his bible that dated back to the Civil War. He said, "I know you will appreciate this".  I love you Uncle Phil!

Phillip would sit with our friend, Tom Thorn, on the back porch when he was in highschool. They loved to eat my mom's chocolate cake and watch my dad grouch about most everything as he tried to sleep in the daylight hours and work the night shift. My dad loved Phil. He taught Phil how to use tools and shared with him the knowledge of "man work". Phil loved my dad!

Aunt Pat, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.  The memories I have of my uncle Phil are the smiles, the story telling, the jokes, and that warm presence he had when you were around him.  One of my favorite memories is when I was younger, driving up to Cleveland, and he took me to my first baseball game at the old Municiple Stadium.  I also remember Phil loved his nightly popcorn – boy could he eat some popcorn.  In my later years, when he meet my wife and my 3 kids; my kids gravitated towards him and still to this day they repeat a joke uncle Phil shared with them – “see my finger … see my thumb .. see my fist … you’d better run” – that’s what I remember about my uncle Phil; a happy go lucky fun man; and my kids will remember that too.  We will miss his smile and kind heart but he will never be forgotten.  

We have great memories of Phil and Pat, and our times spent together.  We met at Cleveland Baptist Church in 1987.  We shared much laughter, (tears when Paula died), and fun times playing ROOK!  Phil had a wonderful smile, and 
and humorous personality, fun to be around.  His faith was very strong, he loved our Lord.  Pat, Phyllis, and family, you are in our prayers, and we send our love.  God bless you.

We came to Cleveland Baptist as a young couple and Phil & Pat were one of the couples who immediately reached out to us, including us in their get-togethers and helping us get established in the church. Phil was always joking and laughing. Thank God for the promise of heaven where we can all get together again. We love you and are praying for you.

Phil Croy, my best friend and confidant. Phil was a very good man and he and I raised our families together.  We both attended Cleveland  Baptist Church and Bob Schroyes companions class with all of our friends. We played together at OBA. at class outings,fishing trips at Musquito Lake, and about everything else we did. My daughters called him Uncle Phil and our Christian fellowship was probably closer than most blood brothers.  He moved to Florida for 17 years but we kept in touch by phone and when he visited here he stayed with us and we stayed close to him when we visited there.  In the winter he would always call me when we got snow here.  He liked to tell me I'm sitting on the lania while you are out shoveling snow. He finally decided to buy a condo here in Ohio and found one on our street. He had to remodel and it took a yearbefore they moved back. After he got sick we visited him regularly and did what we could. The last week before he died he had stopped having visitors but one day he told his Pat to call me because he wanted to have some fellowship.  Of course I went and when I went in I saw he was sick, and tired. I asked him if he wanted me to talk or just sit with him and he said just sit with me and I did for about an hour.  That happened to be the last conversation I had with him. When I'm he died I told him good night I'll see you in the morning. No sad goodbyes all praises to God our Savior.  Loved him and told him I would look out for his Pat.as much as I could.

For my beautiful sister Pat,
I have known Phil, my wonderful brother-in-law, since I was a little girl about 8 years old.  I will miss his laughter, his smile, his joking, his kindness, and his love for family and friends.  As a Christian, his faith was like no other!!  He is with our Lord and I will see them both one day.

I use to spend some summers with Phil, Pat, and the girls (Phyllis and Paula).  It was the best time ever in my youth.  One summer, Phil gave us all nicknames.  Phil was Philosophical Phil, Pat was Perfectionist Pat, and I was Marvelous Martha. We called each other those nicknames whenever the occasion called for it.  As and end note, which always had my heart, besides my father; Phil was the only other person that called me “Merle”.  Love you always Phil!!

I so enjoyed the tribute movie. The picture that made me tear up was the one of him at the table with his Bible and Strong’s Concordance opened, making notes - I’m sure to teach God’s Word. It’s a beautiful picture of his great love for the Lord. He obviously loved his family very much, as well. I know he’s having a great time with Dad and many who have gone on before. It must have been a great reunion!  Our prayers are with you, Pat, Phyllis - and all your family. You are much loved by the Folgers and Howard’s. 

When you think of Phil, you remember the big smile he always had and a great sense of humor.  He was a faithful man who loved his family and above all loved his Saviour. What a legacy he leaves. Pat, we love you and Wolf and I will continue to pray for you. 

I first met Phil at First Baptist Church of North Port when he and Pat were snowbirds. Was nice to meet a fellow West Virginian. He always had a smile and a story to tell. I recall the sweet time we had eating ice cream at the Shell Factory and sharing stories. Was looking forward to cruising with Phil & Pat but the Lord had other plans. Will see him again one day. 

Pat, Phyllis and grandchildren,  our thoughts and prayers remain with you.  Phil will always be within our heart.
He was always quick with a good story and liked to reminisce of past school days.
JoAnn was honored to be the made of honor when the high school sweethearts married fifty-four short years ago.
Phil is now rejoicing with daughter Paula and other loved ones while watching over Pat and family.

Uncle Phil had an infectious smile and a gift of storytelling. He always had a story to tell me everytime he would come to WV. His most favorite story to me was a memory of me explaining to him all while holding a honeybee that my dads bees don't sting. He would always use his best WV accent. I will miss your smile and your kind heart. I look forward to seeing you again in the presence of our Lord. I love you Uncle Phil!

I first met Phil when we were in 1st grade at Shady Spring Elementary School.  Later at Shady High School and then he married my sister-in-law (Pat).  Their family and ours spent many hours, vacations and good times together.  Phil was like the brother I never had.  We didn't always agree on things but we had a very good relationship.  We always enjoyed our times together.  I love you Phil and will miss you. Until we meet again in Heaven's glory.

We remember our children growing up together at Cleveland Baptist Church....they were in the nursery together, then on to Sunday School; then, went to Heritage Christian School together.

Pat & Phil were very instrumental in encouraging us as a young married couple.  Faithful, compassionate, fun!--just good ol' real people. Phil was always Uncle Phil to us. His testimony was (and still is)  faithful and true--especially so when such tragic trials came his way. May we take that as a lesson and face things the same way.
We will continue to pray for God's grace to envelope the family and friends that grieve.

What a beautiful tribute to an amazing person.  I will always remember his big smile and his awesome hugs.  You could always feel his love, he was so genuine.  What a great birthday gift Paula received. My heart is breaking but knowing he is in heaven celebrating and not feeling any pain is comforting to all of us in this crazy world right now. It really is sad news.  Phillip lived across the road from me in Glen Morgan when we attended Shady.  Without Phillip, my teenage years would have been boring.  Thanks to Phillip, and his great parents, Zen and Marie, I enjoyed some of the most wonderful times a teenager could haves. ,
They took me on trips to Cleveland and Washington, D.C. with them. What great times we had.  There’s just too much to write about...
I called Phillip a few times after he got sick and he called me a few times.  I visited him in Cleveland two times, once with my sister, Teresa and later with Susie Cox (Stanley).  Phillip was a good man and a true believer in Jesus Christ...he had been for many years.  There is just too much to say about how much Phillip and his family added to the fun years in my life from the time he, and they, moved into the neighborhood.  I was his best man when he married Pat.  Now I realize I didn’t visit him enough nor did I call him enough and I regret it, too.  God bless Pat and their daughter. Praying for you all.   Phil will be missed by many.  I grew up in the church and your family has and is so faithful.  Both of you have been a wonderful example of a loving Christian marriage and true Christian values.   One thing I cling to after my brother passed away, was he is no longer in pain. The memories of having Phil &Pat disciple us as young New Born Christians are forever a mark on our life. We felt the love and acceptance from this dear couple and they always brought such joy just to see them together. We will miss Brother Phil dearly. Our hearts go out to you and your family. We were so thrilled when you moved back to Cleveland, when we heard about Phil’s passing our hearts were broken, I guess because we so wanted to get together with you two but the opportunity never came. We have wonderful memories of back in the day when we first came to Cleveland baptist, we love you and will keep you in our prayers, soon I hope we will all be with Phil having great times in heaven together, love you, hope to see you soon my friend.

Pat and Family, I really got acquainted with your family in 1991 when your Daughter, Paula, went on to Heaven because that was the month my Husband was diagnoised with Cancer thus passing in November.  Your Family were such a comfort to us during that time.  I truly love the both of you then you had to retire to FL, but you still remembered me with your Christmas cards and  notes...we know Phil is with his loving heavenly Father and daughter, and making everyone laugh as he was good at!  He always had that "smile" for everyone and I personally know what you will be going thru take time to grieve and the memories help, your Faith will get you through. I met Phil, Pat, Phyllis and Paula when I joined Cleveland Baptist Church and taught 1st grade at Heritage Christian School ;Phyllis was in my class.  We have been in contact ever since (1974).  I was still single so my teacher name was Miss Wesley.  After I got married, Mr Croy still called me Miss Wesley and he called my husband “Miss Wesley’s husband”. Until He was ushered into Heaven, I was known as Miss Wesley.  My only regret is that he got to go to Heaven before me. However,  a glad reunion awaits someday when all of God’s children meet in Heaven.  There’s a song I think of every time someone is ushered into Heaven.  The title is What a Day that will Be and the 2nd verse goes like this, There’ll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear; no more sickness nor pain, no more parting over there. And forever I will be with the one who died for me.  What a day, glorious day that will be.  Miss Wesley looks forward to seeing you again.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I will always remember Mr. Croy with fondness.

So much of my childhood was spent with the Croy family!  Uncle Phil was either loving on us, scaring us or laughing  along with us or at us!! So many stories I could tell, especially when he took out his teeth!  He always knew how to have fun.   I am so thankful for the years we all had together.   Life was sweeter because of Uncle Phil,  Aunt Pat, Phyllis and Paula!  Love to you all and thank you for all the precious memories we share! ❤️

I knew Phillip all of my life. He was always so kind and loving to me like a brother. I couldn’t say Phillip when I was young so I called him Phip Phip.   I got to visit with he and Pat a few months ago. It was so wonderful to see them. My heart is broken but I know he is well. I loved you  very much Phip Phip.   My thoughts and prayers are with you Pat and your family. 

God is so good to give us the gift of memories. I am truly thankful for having known Mr Croy, Mrs Croy, Phyllis and Paula. I remember and will always remember Mr Croy for the awesome smile he always had. I don’t think I ever saw him without it, even when times were not the best. He is/was one of those faithful people you could always count on. What a legacy he leaves. But most of all I’m grateful for his testimony and the Hope we have in Christ that we will reunite again. Just as he has reunited with precious Paula. Praying for Mrs Croy, Phyllis and the family for the weeks and months ahead. Our strength comes from the Lord. May you find peace and comfort

To the entire Family...  I am deeply sorry for your loss.  Phil was a wonderful man. Very godly and he loved his family.. He had a smile that nobody could escape.  His devotion of loving the Lord was his life and he new Heaven was his home.  May the Lord give all of you Peace during this difficult time. Love and Prayers..

The Croy family certainly helped build Cleveland Baptist Church, and helped in so many ways there.. what a blessing to know them!
