Kathleen Christo

Kathleen (Lowney) Christo, age 80, of Tiverton, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 24, 2025, with her loving husband by her side. She was the devoted wife of John S. Christo, with whom she shared 61 wonderful years of marriage.

Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, Kathleen was the daughter of the late James C. and Constance M. (Hanley) Lowney. She was a 1962 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School and went on to pursue a career in nursing, graduating from Cape Cod Hospital School of Nursing in 1964. She furthered her education at Bristol Community College throughout the years.

Kathleen began her nursing career at Union Hospital in Fall River Ma. After taking time to raise her family, she returned to work as a CNA instructor for the American Red Cross, where she shared her compassion and knowledge with future caregivers.

A dedicated community member, Kathleen was involved with the Tiverton Lion’s Club, TEMPO, the Tiverton Boosters Club, the Holy Ghost Sports Council, the Diabetes Association of Fall River, The Literacy Volunteers of America, Girl Scouts of Rhode Island and the Women’s Club of Newport County. A woman of many talents and interests, she was an avid watercolor painter, often inspired by nature’s beauty—especially landscapes and gardens. It was not uncommon to receive a Christmas card made with Kathy’s artwork. She also enjoyed reading, ceramics, traveling and shopping. On her travels to Jamaica she gained the nickname Kathy Shop-A-Lot by the Jamaican merchants. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family. One of Kathy’s greatest gifts to her family was her compassion and advice when someone was ill and needed love and support.

In addition to her beloved husband, she leaves behind her children: John Christo and his wife Kristine of Berkley, Carolyn Woods and her husband Michael of Assonet, David Christo of Tiverton, and Colleen Fernandes of Tiverton; her siblings: Mary Margaret Lowney of Fall River, Nancy Lowney of Tiverton, and James Lowney of Florida. She was a loving grandmother to Courtney Christo, Cameron Christo (fiancée, Vanessa Sherman), Christian Fernandes, Julia Vasconcelos (fiancé, Patrick Horgan), Kyle Vasconcelos (fiancée, Samantha Cray), and Brittany Vasconcelos, and a proud great-grandmother to Scarlett Deane. It was not uncommon to walk into the house and see Scarlett and Gram Gram at the kitchen table having an ice cream party. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Grace Ann Duarte, and her brother, Timothy Lowney.

Her funeral will be held Friday, May 30, 2025, at 8:30 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Theresa’s Church, Stafford Road, Tiverton. Relatives and friends are invited. To honor and celebrate Kathleen's life the family has requested you wear bright colors for her services. Her visitation will be held Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton.
