Michael Jay Baker, age 84, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 15, 2026 at his home in Vero Beach, Florida. He was the husband of the late Wendy Hanson Baker with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Attleboro, Massachusetts, a son of the late Royal and Stephanie (Stone) Baker, he lived in South Norwalk, Connecticut for many years before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona and then Vero Beach, Florida, in retirement. He and wife Wendy had a special residence in Little Compton, Rhode Island, to which they often retreated and where they shared much time with family and friends.
A graduate of Mount Hermon School, he earned a bachelors degree from Stanford University and a masters degree from Boston University. Mr. Baker was the Vice President in charge of compensation and benefits for Handy and Harmon, a national processor and refiner of metals to which he had sold his family business, Attleboro Refining Company, in the early seventies. He served the company for close to thirty years before retiring.
Michael Baker was unique in many ways, enjoying the benefits of an infectious
sense of humor. Driven by a competitive spirit, he became an avid and skilled bridge player like his father before him. Competing in national tournaments and local group competitions with equal enthusiasm, he achieved the nationally recognized Gold Life Master status. Skiing, tennis and golf received equal dedication, ensuring above average competence with all three. Close friends were a treasure to be embraced, shared and enjoyed through travel and social exchange. Committed friends, a loving family and a quiet commitment to charitable giving, give this life special meaning and one of which to be proud.
He is survived by two daughters: Gay Baker and her partner, Frank Vernusky of San Francisco, and Amy Baker Zabele and her husband David of Furlong, Pennsylvania and a granddaughter, Tess Zabele. He is also survived by Susan Swope with whom he was in a long term loving relationship.
Contributions may be made in Mike's memory to the Rhode Island Foundation for the Baker Family Fund at One Union Station, Providence, RI 02903.
Mike Baker will be interred in a private ceremony in Attleboro, Massachusetts. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at ACTS Indian River Estates, 2400 Indian Creek Blvd West, Vero Beach, FL 32966.
