

Raymond Lemos Wilbur Sr., age 91, passed away peacefully at his residence in Kittery, Maine on Friday, January 6, 2017 with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of the late Evelyn A. (Rigby) Wilbur. Born in New Bedford, MA on December 14, 1925, he was a son of the late Granville and Mary (Lemos) Wilbur. Raymond was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Raphael’s Church in Kittery, ME.
A Purple Heart recipient, he was a United States Navy veteran, having served during WWII as Seaman 2nd Class on PT boat 495, Ron 33 in New Guinea and Leyte, Philippine Islands.
Ray was a Mechanical Designer at Electric Boat in Groton, CT for many years before retiring in 1981. Prior to that Mr. Wilbur also worked at the Acushnet Company in MA. After retirement, he and his wife spent many years in Mesa, AZ until they returned to New England in 2011.
He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V., Chapter 7 in New Bedford, MA, a member of the V.F.W. in Pawcatuck, CT and a lifetime member of the Groton Sportsmen’s club in North Stonington, CT. He enjoyed travelling, hunting and spending time with his family.
Ray is survived by one daughter; Dawn Vessels and her husband Richard of Rochester, NH; one son, Raymond Wilbur Jr. of Elliot, ME; four grandchildren, April Osborn of CO, Bryan Campbell of AZ, Raymond Wilbur III of NH and Eric Wilbur of ME; five great-grandchildren, AJ and Hayden Osborn, Brady, Lily and Charlotte Campbell; and one half brother, Carl Junier of FL. Raymond is also survived by sisters – in – law, Rachel Wilbur and Helen Junier of MA, Veronica Anger of AZ and Barbara Connell of NV; a brother – in – law, Raymond L. Connell of NV and many nieces and nephews.
Raymond was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (Rigby) Wilbur; his parents, Granville and Mary (Lemos) Wilbur of Mattapoisett, MA; brothers, Granville Wilbur of Acushnet, MA, William Wilbur and half-brother, James Junier, both of Mattapoisett, MA.
His memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 9:00AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St. Fall River, MA. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours prior to his service from 8:00 to 9:00AM.
