Theresa "Terry" I. Sunderland

Theresa I. “Terry” (Powers) Sunderland, age 91, of Fall River, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2019. She was the beloved wife of the late James D. Sunderland, her high school sweetheart. Both were graduates of Durfee High School, class of 1945.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas E. Powers and Yvonne Cyr Powers Perry and step-daughter of the late Lionel Perry.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen A. Sunderland Mathias and son-in-law David J. Mathias of North Palm Beach, FL, loving nieces and their spouses and several great nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Thomas E. Powers, Jr., Raymond Powers and Lorraine J. Harrison.

Theresa was employed at Touhey’s Pharmacy from 1945 to August 1974 and at the Fall River Deaconess Home from August 1974 until the time of her illness in January 2010.

She was very active in her parish, Saint Peter and Paul. A Eucharistic Minister, she brought communion to the sick and the home bound for 15 years, a weekly budget counter at the rectory and very active at the annual festival, baking and working on the pastry booth. She received a Marion Medal in December 2010.

For the past several years, Terry has been a resident of Clifton Assisted Living and Clifton Rehabilitation Nursing Center in Somerset. Her family would like to thank the staff at both facilities for the loving care and companionship they showed her during her time there.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 9am from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Spring St., Fall River. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7pm. Burial will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River.
