
William D. Palmer, age 90 of Georgetown, Texas formerly of Fall River, MA and Little Compton, RI died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at his residence. Husband of the late Elizabeth "Betty" B. (Sherman) Palmer to whom he had been married for 66 years.
Born in Fall River son of the late Thomas B. Palmer and the late Ruth D. (Dassance) Palmer. He attended the Highland School, graduating from James Madison Morton Jr. High School. He graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School Class of 1933, where he was an outstanding pitcher on the baseball team.
Mr. Palmer was an Army Veteran of World War II, seeing service in the Pacific Theater of Operations including Leyte and Japan.
Mr. Palmer joined the former Wrenn Brothers Stock Brokers in Fall River, then the former Union Savings Bank for 10 years. He then served as Treasurer of the Lafayette Co-Operative Bank for 13 years, after which he joined the former Fall River People's Bank now Bank of Fall River as Treasurer and CEO for 21 years retiring in 1980.
He was a longtime member of the Quequechan Club of Fall River, and was very active in its bowling league for over 30 years. He was a member of the Fall River Rotary Club for over 45 years; Treasurer of the Fall River Chapter of the American Red Cross over 10 years; a member of the Board of Cooperative Central Bank in Boston for over 25 years; a member of the Board of Trustees at the former Truesdale Hospital for over 25 years and a member of the Board at Charlton Memorial Hospital.
He was an avid sports fan and fisherman all his life.
Mr. Palmer is survived by : two sons - Thomas S. Palmer (and his wife Ruth) of Elverson, PA, and Edward C. Palmer, MD (and his wife Lolly) of Marble Falls, TX; one daughter - Margery E. Palmer of Plymouth, NH; one sister - Dorothy Wood of Athens, GA; one grandson and one great grandson - Matthew W. Palmer (wife Ally) and son Timothy; three step-grandchildren - Nancy Birkmeyer, PhD, of Ann Arbor, MI, Tara Rodden of Georgetown, TX, and Brent Conlin of San Antonio, TX; eight step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the interment of the cremains of Elizabeth B. and William D. Palmer at 10:00AM, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2010 in Oak Grove Cemetery Fall River, MA. Memorial contributions in their honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association 311 Arsenal St. Watertown, MA or to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation 72 E. Concord St. Boston, MA 02472.
