It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Achal Parkash Kaur, beloved mother, wife, sister and daughter, on Wednesday March 5, 2025. She was born in Medan, Indonesia on January 2, 1974, her name meaning “immovable light”.
Achal was an avid animal lover with a particular soft spot for dogs, at one point in her youth she took care of 5 dogs in her family home. Achal enjoyed playing volleyball in middle school and could not get enough of rujak – a spicy Indonesian fruit salad. In high school she excelled in math and physics, and relaxed with kung fu drama shows on weekends. After high school she came to the US and enrolled at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Later she transferred to George Mason University, married her husband Hemant in 2000 and then graduated with a degree in Economics in 2002. Upon graduating she moved to Houston, Texas to be with her husband where she started her family. Her final move was back to Virginia to be closer to her maternal family, which is where she spent the last 8 years.
Achal was an avid reader with a passion for health subjects and history. She had a natural curiosity to learn, often turned to as a trusted confidant by her family for guidance as she always gave insightful information on every subject. This wealth of knowledge also included where to get the best donuts, ice cream and besan burfi – as she had a persistent sweet tooth even as an adult! Achal also enjoyed hiking and exploring local sites with her family.
Her most prized and passionate undertaking in life was the upbringing of her dear daughter, Illahie. She poured her heart into educating, nurturing, and uplifting Illahie, ensuring that she always felt deeply loved and cherished. She was devoted to her husband, Hemant, their bond built on love, understanding, and unshakable support for one another.
Achal was an incredible soul, a warrior who faced life’s hardships with grace and determination. Though she is no longer with us in body, her kindness, wisdom, and strength will live on in the lives she touched. We will always remember her with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes and her beautiful smile that would light up the room.
