She was born to two loving parents, Ezzat Mihandoost and Ghanbar-Ali Liaghat, on January 1st, 1959, in Shiraz, Fars, Iran. While her scholarly endeavors were impressive – graduating from Pahlavi University with a bachelor’s degree in Persian Literature and Language – her biggest impressions were made outside of her coursework.
Her life of dedicated hard work led her to The United States of America and becoming the co-founder and co-owner of Afi’s Jewelers with her partner in business and in life, Farrokh Salehipour. A woman who always got her energy from others, she spent hours with any and all patrons or “just stopping in” guests at her business, home, and on the walk path around River Creek offering advice and levity for all matters of the heart. She was, in short, the Life Of The Party at every single social gathering. To know her was to love her.
Regardless of her own condition or worries, Afi always had a magical quality that allowed her to bring out delight and humor in every situation spreading infectious jubilation. Her zest for life was unmatched, and her gregarious personality filled any room and heart she came close to.
Her greatest loves (aside from dancing at any occasion with loud music, and getting everyone else to dance with her) were Farrokh Salehipour, her husband of 44 years and lifelong soulmate, Armin Salehipour, her only son, Ashley Whimpey, her chosen daughter, and Leo, their family dog.
She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her immediate family above, as well as by her siblings Hoss Liaghat (Sharzad Mandanipoor), Reza Liaghat, and Mahnaz Liaghat (Kamal Qarooni). She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Nawal Qarooni-Casiano (John Casiano), Dalia Qarooni, Rami Qarooni, and Tara Liaghat.
A private burial will be held for the immediate family on June 7th, 2021. A public gathering to celebrate her life and legacy will be held later that evening, from 6:00PM-8:00PM ET, at National Funeral Home & National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Virginia. The family invites anyone touched by Afi’s light to join them in remembering her spark and honoring her.
