Barbara Woodall Weaver, loving mom to four daughters and Nana to nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and three (and counting) great-great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025 in Ashburn, VA. She was just shy of 98 years young.
Barbara was born on August 10th, 1927 to Florence and Herbert Woodall of Grosse Pointe, MI. She attended the Grosse Pointe Country Day School and was an alumna of Rogers Hall in Lowell, MA and Hood College in Frederick, MD. A life-long learner, she also studied at the Tobe-Coburn School of Fashion Careers in New York.
Raised as a Christian Scientist, Barbara was a devoted member, volunteer and student. She enjoyed a rich social life within the Church, particularly the Mount Vernon, VA branch. She was able to share her joy everywhere she went, with no religious strings attached. She supported troubled teens, prison inmates and senior citizens alike. Barbara volunteered with inner city kids in Washington, DC and later devoted many years to the Loudoun Literacy Council.
She was a talented seamstress, sewing clothing for herself and her family, from Halloween costumes to tailored suits, sharing her love of sewing and needlework with her daughters. She knitted, crocheted, and particularly enjoyed designing and stitching colorful needlepoint pieces.
She also shared her love of music with her family, always singing in the car or whistling with full-out vibrato. In church she would loudly sing the tenor (or bass?) line of a hymn for her own amusement (and the occasional embarrassment of her children).
She lived her life with joy, creativity, playfulness and a positive attitude, teaching her family that there is no judgment in love.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents and her beautiful sisters Margery Willey, Virginia McPike and Constance Fisher, all of Michigan; as well as former husbands Warren Weaver, Jr. and Albert Crichlow, son-in-law Darell Fenn, and too many wonderful cats to count.
She is survived by a large family whom she adored: daughters Carolyn Fenn of Abilene, KS, Sally Weaver of Merion, PA, Melissa Weaver Dunning (Peter) of Shepherdstown, WV and Annie Buck (Nate) of Underhill, VT; grandchildren Amanda Phares (Jim), Miles Fenn (Meghann Lord-Fenn), Jodie Abel, Michael Lee, Moxie Lee, Lily Dunning Widman (Ian), Hannah Won (Joe), Robert Dunning (Leigh Pinkston) and Ivy Buck; great grandchildren Jade Schefter, Sarah Schefter, Alexandra Martinez (Brandon), Caleb Fenn (Lauren), Joshua Fenn, Hope Fenn, Brooklyn Abel, AnnMarie Espinosa (Lawrence), Wesley Widman, Oliver Knight, Benjamin Won and Penelope Won; and great-great grandchildren Cruz Martinez, Kairi Espinosa, Theodore Espinosa and the soon-to-be babies of Caleb & Lauren Fenn and Alexandra & Brandon Martinez.
Barbara’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks for the loving care she received from the staff at Maple Grove in Ashburn, VA where she spent her last five years. She was known there as “the lady with nine lives,” having survived two rounds of Covid and bounced back after every flu. She was the rare person who was put into Hospice care for a period of time and then taken off, going on to live several more years after. She was known there for her sweetness of temper, sense of humor and occasional sassiness. May she rest in peace.
A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2026, with a burial to follow at Cool Spring Natural Cemetery in Berryville, VA.
