

Betty Hudner homemaker and retired Government secretary, age 99, passed away following a short illness on February 23, 2023 at Reston Hospital. Betty was born into a farm family in July of 1923 to Amos and Hattie Myers. She was the youngest girl in a large family of 8 brothers and sisters. Betty was proud of her farm and Mid Western roots. Upon graduation from high school she took the train back East and became one of the first employees at the Pentagon following its opening in 1943. In 1944 she was introduced to a young Naval Officer, Frank Hudner, who had recently returned from the War in Europe. Frank and Betty were married in July 1946 and enjoyed 70 loving years together. In 1948 their son Dennis was born, followed by Nancy Ann in 1951. Her Government career included short stints with both the Army and Navy Departments followed by close to 25 years with the Geological Survey. In retirement Betty enjoyed travel, crafting and dabbled in painting. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, and her husband and daughter. She is survived by her son Dennis (Janne), grandchildren Phillip Knicely (Katie), Brett and Mary Hudner, Alexandra Payne (JP), and great grandchildren Christopher and Patrick Knicely, Savannah, John Calvin, and Georgia Payne. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 o’clock on Thursday, March 9th at Thomas A Becket Catholic Church in Reston. She will be laid to rest at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made in Betty’s honor to Jose Andres World Central Kitchen.
