Carmine Anthony Carosella, 83, of Falls Church, VA, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, surrounded by family and friends, after living with cancer and the effects of a stroke for more than a year.
Carmine was born on June 3, 1941 to Anthony and Valeria Carosella in Boston, MA. He attended Boston Latin High School, and studied Physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Georgetown University. He had an illustrious career as a materials scientist for almost 45 years at the Naval Research Laboratory in Oxon Hill, Maryland. He married his wife, Judy, in 1969, and they had three children.
Despite spending most of his life in the Washington, DC area, Carmine was an avid Boston sports fan, and found ways to continue to follow his beloved Red Sox and Bruins. Carmine was an impressive athlete himself, active in golfing, biking, hiking, ice skating, skiing, bowling, playing racquetball, softball, hockey and soccer. Carmine and Judy enjoyed connecting with their heritage through Italian classes, language meetups, and trips to Italy. Carmine’s faith was important to him, and he was an active member at St. James Catholic Church. He was a tenor in the church choir as well as New Dominion choir. But his passion was gardening, as shown by his extra large and productive community garden plot, his participation in the Camelot Garden Club and Fairfax Master Gardeners, and his beautiful yard at home, complete with water features, a gazebo, and a “secret garden” for his grandchildren.
In all of his pursuits, Carmine made lasting friendships. He was genuinely curious about people and the world. He read everything he could, and he shared his knowledge with people. He was generous with his time and money, helping neighbors, gardeners and colleagues. He was a lifelong learner and friend.
Survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy Carosella; brother and sister-in-law John and Melissa Carosella of Rochester Hills, MI; sister and brother-in-law Valerie and Michael Nee of Kingston, MA; daughter Christine Carosella of Sudbury, MA; daughter and son-in-law Lorinda Carosella and Keith Rosenblatt of Waltham, MA; son and daughter-in-law Anthony and Erica Carosella of Lakeway, TX; three grandchildren: Santiago, Conner, and Natalia. Also supported and survived by several beloved close friends.
A visitation/wake will be held at Murphy’s Funeral Home in Falls Church, on Sunday, February 9th, from 3pm - 7pm. A funeral mass will be at St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church on Monday, February 10th, at 10:00am, followed by inurnment and reception.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. James Catholic Church in Carmine’s name (https://stjamescatholic.org/stewardship).
