

Carolina (90) passed away on February 17th, 2024 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was born on June 17th, 1933 in Dyer, West Virginia to Guiseppe and Congetta Mazzella. She graduated from Cowen High School, in Webster Co. West Virginia. She moved to Washington DC where she met the love of her life. She married Charles J. Sterner Jr. on February 19th, 1955.
Carolina & Charles raised their family in Hayfield Farms, where She lived for 45 years. She was a beloved member of their community. She worked at Hayfield Elementary School, in Fairfax County, as head Secretary, for 23 years before retiring.
Carolina never met a stranger. She made everyone immediately comfortable, in her home. She loved cooking Italian food for others, good conversation, a great book, debating politics, hosting parties, listening to Luciano Pavarotti but mostly she loved spending time with friends and family.
Carolina is preceded in death by her parents, husband and 8 siblings. Eula Romano, Libby Vitello, Lucille Blessi, Clara Mazzella, Anna Mazzella, Nick Mazzella, Julie Grizzell and Rosalie Ward.
Carolina is survived by her sons Charles (Sheila) Sterner III of Fredericksburg, VA, John (Julie) Sterner of Falls Church City, VA, and Sister Patricia (Pat) Pacifico of Hicksville, NY. She had 3 Grandchildren Charles Sterner IV of Huntsville, AL, Mark (Leana) Sterner of Houston TX and Jillian Sterner of Falls Church City, VA who she will miss dearly. Caroline also had many beloved nieces and nephews.
In Lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests a donation to Carolina’s hometown Church which she loved and supported for over 50 years.

A visitation for Carolina will be held Tuesday, February 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042 with a funeral service to follow at 11:00am. Interment to follow the service at 12:00 PM at National Memorial Park.
