David earned a Bachelor’s degree from Haverford College and a Masters from George Washington University. He had a deep knowledge of world affairs and followed developments abroad closely. He went to Spain as an exchange student, and later hosted a Spanish youngster at his home. In college, he was given a scholarship to go to Northern Ireland before the Good Friday Agreement. He lived among Catholics and Protestants and then wrote a book inspired by his experiences, “North of the Border.” David loved Ireland and is credited in “Dark Queen of Donegal”, a historical best-selling novel, for his role in its preparation. He also worked for the Library of Congress and later at the US-China Policy Foundation.
Those who knew David came to know that he had a sharp wit and a kind heart. His greatest loves were his family and friends, his dog Rusty and sports. He was very close to his mother and father, his sister Brandice, his brother Aran and his cousin Brennan Downey. He also was very proud of his nieces and nephew, Sarah and Davita Wrone and Lucas Canes. He will be deeply missed.
