Dean Crawford Rogers Jr.

Dean Crawford Rogers, Jr., also known to family members as Dee, died at home in Reston, VA on December 15, 2016. He was born in Passaic, NJ on August 25, 1947. He graduated from Beaver High School, Beaver, PA, where he played starring roles in the school's dramatic performances. He obtained an undergraduate degree from Davis & Elkins College, Elkins, WV, and later earned masters degrees in library science and geography from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Catholic University. After graduating from Davis & Elkins he worked briefly as a high school teacher, then for several years as head librarian at Rappahannock Community College. During the latter half of his career, he held a position as map librarian with the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, VA.

He was a long-time member of the Reston Masters Swim Team and swam with the team twice per week, every week for decades. He cherished his trips to the pool and the friendships developed over the years with members of the team. He also swam competitively at masters swim meets organized by the team, and helped the team conduct special outdoor swim events at Lake Anne in Reston.

While living in rural areas outside Rappahannock, VA he was an active and successful organic gardener and farmer. His meticulously tended organic tomato plants grew to the size of small trees, and all crops fluorished under his care. He was an avid bicyclist and built bikes from scratch for family members. He was a proponent of photovoltaic energy and a fairly successful stock market day trader. The fond memory of his inquisitiveness, keen intelligence, sense of humor, and unpretentious ways will live on in the hearts and minds of family and friends.

His is survived by his brother, David L. Rogers and wife, Clarissa Rogers of Falls Church, VA; his sister, Ann M. Rogers and husband, John Vest of Boones Mill, VA; his niece, Anna Gabrielle Rogers Frota and husband, Wilson Frota and daughter, Camila Marie, of Falls Church; his nephew David Charles Rogers of Falls Church; four stepbrothers and their extended families including, Steve Russell and wife Nancy Ahalt Russell, York PA; John Russell and wife, Sandy, Palmer Lake, CO; Ned Russell and wife, Marie, Wallingford, PA; and Bob Russell and wife, Betty Ann, Grand Rapids, MI; step sister-in-law, Rita Russell, Sterling, VA; cousins and their extended families including, Phillip Rogers and wife, Marcia, Powell, OH; Mary Beth Hall and husband, Mike, Newark, OH; Keith Rogers, Kenton, OH; Yale Ferguson and Abigale Juliani of CA; and Margaret Ann Ferguson of FL.

He is preceeded in death by his parents, Dean C. Rogers, Sr. and Mary Jane Ferguson Rogers; his stepmother, Jane S. Rogers; and a stepbrother, Mike Russell.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice in Dean's memory.
