Our beloved husband and father, Dick Hou Wong of Springfield, Virginia, passed away at age 75 on November 25, 2018 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC after waging a brave battle against liver cancer. His family was by his side.
Dick Hou was born on January 25, 1943 in Taishan, China. He moved to Hong Kong at age 11 and then to the United States in 1963, first living in New York City. He spent time in Massachusetts for college, graduating as an electrical engineer from Lowell Technological Institute (now University of Massachusetts Lowell). After graduation, he settled in northern Virginia when he became a civilian employee for the United States Navy. Dick was a program manager and engineer there until his retirement. Afterward, he enjoyed his newfound free time playing mahjong, listening to Chinese music, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a loving son, devoted husband, committed father, and doting grandfather who gave his all to his loved ones. His mother remembers him catching frogs as a child in China for the family. As the oldest son, he helped take care of his four younger siblings, especially his youngest brother John. There were many occasions when he guided them while growing up, including teaching his brothers and sister how to drive, and his brothers on how to wait tables so that they could earn spending money. After he moved to Virginia, he would frequently make the long drive back to New York to visit his parents.
His loving wife, Helena, fondly recalls that he juggled a full-time job and primary evening responsibility for the children so that she could pursue her college degree at night. This enabled her to have a successful career of her own. His children, Amy and Danny, remember him always putting them first; he was a consummate family man that was always generously providing them with his time, support, and advice. He took great pride in his grandchildren, Nolan, Gracie, and Annabelle, who were always overjoyed when he visited. They loved being held by him, holding his hand on walks, and listening while he read them stories.
Throughout his life, Dick was a hardworking man with a good heart. His philosophy was to spend modestly on himself, but to be generous to family, friends, and those in need. He lived the American dream of establishing a comfortable life for his family while providing a bright future for successive generations.
Dick Hou was preceded in death by his father, Poy Kiu, and his brother, William. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Helena; daughter Amy (Jason); son Daniel (Lily); three grandchildren; mother Ngan Yau; brothers Dick Yan (Joyce) and John (Sandra); and sister Yenda (Warren).
Funeral services will be held at National Funeral Home at 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Virginia, 22042, on Saturday, December 15 beginning at 10:00 AM. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation in Dick Hou’s honor to the Red Cross.
