I learned about the devastating news of Diego’s‘s passing only today when I went back for a haircut, fully expecting to see him, have our usual morning Espresso with him and talk to him again. I was devastated when I saw the notice on the door, that this dear man is no longer with us. 

All day long I’ve fought  hard to hold back my tears. In the last four years that I have gone to Diego’s Hair Salon for a haircut, I became a big fan of this frail and kindhearted man whose generosity and friendliness knew no boundaries. I will definitely visit his resting place  so I can once again talk to my old friend Diego. His voice still rings in my ears, his jovial and lighthearted disposition is still in my eyes, and his friendship will forever remain in my heart.

May God rest his dear soul in eternal peace , and may his survivors find solace and happiness in the undying love that all his clients, including myself, feel for him; he will be missed dearly by all of us.

Diego d'Ambrosio was no mere mortal -  and certainly no mere barber.  'Impresario' was more like it.  For his was a true salon, where neighbors were constantly stopping by to greet the man of the house, where opera music was usually playing, and where every one of us was made to feel as though we were a privileged guest.  Sitting in Diego's barber chair - as I did for 32 years - was to relax and laugh as the master whispered his jokes, talked politics, and gave haircuts that always made me look and feel younger!   And while his warmth and utter civility made all of us who knew him far better people, he wasn't above letting that civility slip occasionally to have some fun.  I can remember Diego's faux rage as a would-be new customer walked in and asked if there were "other barber shops" in the neighborhood.  Diego exploded at the comparison of his salon to some ordinary "barber shop!"  

I was honored to have my picture on one of Diego's walls, which are covered with new and faded shots of the high and mighty.  He was so proud that I was a TV weatherman and would let everyone know who I was when I came for a haircut.  As humbled as I was by his attention, it was Diego himself who was the biggest star in the room.  He could and did charm everyone with his kindness and uproarious laughter.  One look at the photo of him with Pope Benedict and you could see that it was the Pontiff who was smitten!  For his legendary grit, suffering through personal trials and rarely letting on, his was a heroism that I shall long remember.  Thank you, my friend, for all the joy you brought to my life.       .

Around 1964, my newlywed parents lived on P Street in the Dupont Circle area.  My father, Giuseppe, had just moved to the U.S. from Italy.  He must have had his hair cut by Diego in those early years and then maybe again in the early '70s when we lived in Silver Spring.  In our mixed Italian-English speaking family, anyone who cut hair was "Diego."  This was so ingrained in me that when I studied Italian at the University of Maryland, I said "diego" to mean a barber and my professor looked at me very funny, and said no, "barbiere" is the word!  Sadly, my father died in 2008.  Condolences.  Elena
  


  

Diego was a a true Gentleman, his charismatic and charming personality was only part of his wonderful character, he  was a role model for all who knew him, admired him , and loved him. I knew Diego mostly vicariously through is youngest son my dear friend Fabrizio.  When I met Diego he was so sincere and inviting, an old world, long surviving champion of human spirit. God Bless his Son's Marco and Fabrizio. REST IN PEACE FINE SIR, THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY IS BETTER FOR KNOWING YOU. THANK YOU FOR LIVING A LIFE AS A TRUE LEADER OF HUMANITY, DEMONSTRATING SPIRIT AND HARD WORK. PLEASE REST KNOWING YOUR BOYS ARE LOVED AND WILL BE CARED FOR BY LOVED ONES.
