Doris E. Gilroy

Doris E. Gilroy, 92, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2018. She is survived by her children Mindy Emerson (Bruce), Russell Gilroy, Patti Lunchick (Eric) and Lisa Peterson (Tom), grandchildren Ryan Emerson (Laura), Ben and Nicole Emerson, Gretchen Gilroy, Joshua, Zachary and Lexi Lunchick, Lauren and Alex Peterson, and great-grandchildren Malachi and Sylvie Emerson.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years Wendall. They were married in Washington DC before moving to Virginia.

Doris was also preceded in death by her twin sister Dorotha. They were born in Hopwood, Pennsylvania on June 30, 1925. The family moved to Uniontown, Pennsylvania before Doris’s 9th grade and she attended Uniontown High School. Doris was a majorette in the high school band. After high school she went to school to learn how to be a teletype operator. After completing the program she got a job working for Western Union in Washington, DC and continued working there for ten years.

Doris was an excellent cook and her interests included decorating cakes, gardening, sewing, and reading. She was also very active in the activities of her four children.

A visitation will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22042. A service will follow at 10:00 AM and burial will follow at 11:00 AM.
