It is with great sadness that the family of Dorit Schwartz announces her passing following over a year long battle with pancreatic cancer, on May 05, 2023, at the age of 68. Dorit passed away in her home in Arlington, Virginia and will be lovingly remembered by her husband Sam; her children Roy (Kelly) and Nataly (Rachel); her mother Agi; her brother Johnny; her grandson's Hudson and Landon; her nephews, nieces, and cousins; many wonderful friends, and innumerable students. She was predeceased by her father George.
Dorit was born in Haifa, Israel, in 1954 to Agi and George. She married her childhood sweetheart Sam (Shimshon) in 1974. They had their first son Roy in 1975 and shortly after they moved to England. They then welcomed their daughter Nataly in 1982 born in London. In 1991, the family moved to the DC area in the United States.
Starting with her time in the army as a young woman, Dorit had a passion for teaching, and was much beloved by both the many students she taught at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School and by her adult students. She also opened and ran the "Sabra" Hebrew Day Camp where many children in the DC area learned Hebrew while having fun at Camp. Dorit always had a unique way of combining fun with education.
She was a fabulous cook and hostess, and brought that energy and flair to the Israeli restaurant she and Sam owned in London. She was an amazing daughter, mother, and grandmother, and her priority were always making sure that her family felt how much she loved them. She had a gift for words and wrote beautiful Hebrew poetry and was a talented artist as well. She had a playful sense of humor, and one of the most generous spirits one can imagine. Her vibrant light may be extinguished, but she's had a lasting impact on all those whose lives she's touched.
The service and burial will be on Sunday May 7th at: King David Memorial Gardens Gan Eden section at 2pm (follow the signs for Dorit Schwartz) 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22042.
The family will be sitting shiva at Dorit and Sam's home from 10am-1pm and 4:30-6:30pm beginning on Monday, May 8th.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions in honor of Dorit Schwartz be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
