Ned, I miss you as a great friend and neighbor and we all miss your presence  around us on a daily basis.

Thank you for the beautiful memory  card we found in the door today.  Ned was truly a one of a kind helpful and always friendly neighbor.  The kind of good guy everyone wants as a  neighbor.  As western  Michigan transplants we loved to talk all things MI😀  Ned will be  missed.

Ed will always be Ed to me , never knew him as Ned . We go all the way back to jr. High and senior high sweethearts , drifted in different directions after high school , somehow we found each other on line years later , we always did stay in touch  since  as dear special friends .Ed was one in a million , kind ,sincere, honest , funny , very chatty. God has a wonderful man in heaven with him , I believe Ed has fulfilled what god had planned for him to do while he lived on this earth. I will truly miss him .

In the mid-80s Ned and his posse surprised me by showing up at a stand-up gig in DC. Then, when I walked down to the bar downstairs between my sets, I found them at a table in a festive mood. I joined the celebration and was honored to learn that it was Ned’s bachelor party. I still have the napkin he autographed for me. 

Ned was such a fun guy. He knew how to have a good time! I will always cherish the good times we had at the State theater listening to the Legwarmers and dancing the whole night. As well as the times we went to Old town to sing karaoke. 

Ned  was always so very congenial  --  upbeat --  lovely  to chat with-- and will be sorely missed  in our Falls  Hill neighborhood and  as my  backyard neighbor..      The Sober Family

My older brother ‘Ned’ has always been someone to look up to and emulate. He was kind, funny, interested and generous.  From coming to see me at age 7; walking to the hospital after school( he was 15, who does that?) when I was getting ready to get my tonsils out just to see me, to helping me replace the OG sliding door on my deck that he installed 40 years prior… this guy was special!  Always made a short story long and never, ever was at a loss for words, that was my brother.  He was one of the best humans to walk this earth.  If you were lucky enough to have met our Ned, great for you! I will end by saying, “well done my faithful servant ”  You, my brother have made such a positive impact on this world and at the end of the day… isn’t that what we all hope for?   Love you, love you and miss you… until we meet in Heaven. XO

And while I met Ned nearly 20 years ago in a professional setting it was our passion (and sometimes disdain) for golf that spurred our camaraderie.  The good and bad golf shots we hit were not the point.  It was the sharing of our life experiences, discussion of current issues, political talk and conversations about family that were most important.  Our golf shots were just something we happen to do in-between.     
At a time like this people may relate there are no words to describe how they feel.  Well,  – well, there are words.  Ned was a prolific conversationalist with deep knowledge on a variety of subjects, lulls within discussions never happened.  He was quite a connoisseur of beers and often shared his new finds with me.  Ned was indefatigable, after 18 holes I was looking forward to my recliner and a nap, he would be off to some other adventure.  And most of all, he had a great sense of humor – he really enjoyed a good hearty laugh.
Ned was a great friend that I will always remember.

I heard the sad news that Ned had passed. I am keeping you in my thoughts  as you come to terms with  his loss.  He meant a lot to a great number of people and he will be missed. I hope you have the love, kindness & gentle support from those around you. My sincere condolences ♡jvg

Ned was  at Sleepy Hollow ES around 2005 where he taught GT (gifted and talented) classes.  There he got  a golf  foursome together that played regularly until last year. With Ned it was never a dull moment.  There was always a story, anecdote, or topic to discuss.  After 4 hours of golf we would often spend another half hour in the parking lot for what I described to my wife as "car talk."   We also got to meet and play a few rounds with Herb, a friend of Ned's from Jordan's basketball days.  Pictured  is    from  Herb's place of the  Shenandoah after a day of golf.   I am posting another golf picture from the  18th tee at our regular course,  East Potomac.  


Ned was my little brother, and we shared 67 years of memories. I loved him all this time; and I know he did me. To say I will miss him is the ultimate understatement.  I love you, my dear best friend. 

Ned's motto: "TO MAKE A SHORT STORY LONG . . ."  [whatever became of the truck?]

Ned was my friend and colleague for nearly 50 years. First, as coworkers at the Kennedy Center, then as elementary education students at George Mason, and then as teachers in Fairfax County. He was kind and generous and always gave more than he received.

My compassion and sympathy go to the two women he left behind for whom this loss is particularly acute. I wish I could offer more comfort than mere words. 

Ned also leaves behind a legion of loyal, appreciative friends stretching from Michigan to Maine to the DMV. It would be very cathartic if a bunch of us could gather in a restaurant or a café or in somebody’s home to celebrate Ned’s life and to tell our favorite Ned stories in an informal setting. We could all offer solace to one another.

Would Cousin Mike be willing to organize such an event? What do the rest of y’all think?

We are going to miss Ned. We moved across street 26 years ago and we have been in constant contact ever since. Whether it was discussing home renovation projects, basketball, walley ball, and, of course, the travails of using bamboo as a barrier.  I will miss his ever present conversations.

My brother Don and I had a chance to visit with Ned and Cousin Mike recently in Austin, Texas.  Those two were having the trip of a lifetime. 

So sorry to hear of Ned’s passing.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Stapleton family.

I am deeply saddened by loss of our great neighbor Ned. He will be greatly missed.  Ned was one of the kindest and thoughtful neighbor I have known - always offering to help whenever he noticed I might need a helping hand. Ned, I know the angels will love you and welcome you with open arms. Ned RIP.

Ned was a great neighbor.  He was the first to welcome us to the neighborhood and always made time to talk with everyone he met (I don't know how he ever got around to do yardwork).  He will be missed.  My deepest condolences to Estrella and Gabeiela.

Ned was a wonderful neighbor, always of good cheer, and after 25 years of living across the street from him, going to GMU hoops games, and talking outside, I will miss him very much.   Our neighborhood just won't be the same without him.

My very best wishes to Estrellla and Gabriella and all other members of his family and I will be praying for all of them.



I have only met Ned  a handful of times through my husband Joe and I have to say he was always so kind and thoughtful. He had a great sense of humor. He always made you feel included. He will be missed.
