Thinking of Uncle Fred today. Though he wasn't a blood relative, he was one of that handful of adults other than my parents who really made a difference in shaping me.  A good, solid man who lives on in the hearts of many.  I miss him.

Fred was my big brother.  As recorded family memories recall, in our youth he was my tormentor, my competitor -- yet often my defender.  Yes, we knew he was smart, as in getting many school honors.  But that was not unique.  The truth of what he truly was dawned on this siblling, perhaps epecially slowly, surprisingly, yet surely over 93 years.  
I had no indea what his profession was until he explained, "Well,if the president wanted to drop a bomb on Kruschev's desk, I'd tell him how to get it there."  That's was very funny at the time.  But now we know why it is said that this man may have played a huge part in preventing 
World War III.
But as so many have testified, it was his character that truly distinguished him.  The tease and, yes, bully, this kid brother remembers has joined the ranks of my greatest heroes and saints.

Dear Aunt Mary, Peggy, Fred, Mary Ellen, and George - 

I learned late of the death of dear Uncle Fred.  Please accept my love and prayers from afar.  Last Friday, May 17th, a private Mass was offered for him in Raleigh by Fr. Donal O'Keefe, LC.  Uncle Fred and all of you are so much in my mind, heart, and prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; may he rest in peace.

Dear Doyle family:
Uncle Fred was the most lovable Uncle one could wish for.  His bear hugs were legendary, and his interest in everyone in the family was heartwarming.  I was proud to be his God daughter.   I knew he was a famous guy, but this obituary taught me things I never knew!   Love to you all.

As Fred's one remaining sister (the "little" one), I thank all the colleagues and friends who have written above and add my witness to his qualities as a "big brother" who awed me in childhood, encouraged my choice of vocation as a religious Sister, shared family love always, and in his late years shared revelations about his life, career, and their meaning and value to him.  I knew his modesty about his successes and honors ("that and fifty cents will get me on the bus"); I knew his personal love and support for my work as teacher and writer.  Just to see the photo here moves me to tears of loss but even more of gratitude.

Dear Mary, Fred,Jr, George, and family.

Please accept my deep sympathy. Fred was a mentor, colleague, and a great friend. I feel quite privileged to have known him for almost my entire professional life of nearly half a century. I sometimes regretted not joining his company when I returned from Canada, so I could work for him. Instead, I elected to become an educator, a profession that he valued much. I recall him saying to me that if I couldn't have you work for us, the only place I am glad to see you go to is in a university. His confirmation of my career choice was complete when he encouraged his son to join me for his Masters. I was honored to have Fred,Jr, as my student. I am also very glad to have had the pleasure to work with George.

I feel very fortunate to have been invited to GMU when they established a scholarship in his honor. I had a wonderful and most rewarding visit with Fred then. I shall cherish the memory of that visit as it was the last time I saw him.

The photogrammetric profession has lost a giant in the field who is irreplaceable. He shall be missed.

Dear Mary and Family,

My deepest condolence!Prof. Barry Haack, GMU sent e-mail yesterday, I was shocked, numbed and saddened. We were out of town so missed the last chance to join in prayers and service with you and family to pray and pay our homage. We feel so helpless and sad. 

Fred was a the kindest and generous human being, I had ever come to know. His life,work and amazing accomplishments were always a source of inspiration to me and many others who were fortunate to know him. He was my greatest mentor and guide and always helped me in many professional activities related to the Potomac Region ASPRS. We have lost a giant in the society.

I had the honor and privilage to seek his guidance frequently during over last fifteen years. I talked to him just a few weeks ago to see if he would need any help to attend our recent PR Board annual dinner. He always sounded very upbeat even being unwell. Kusum and I were planning to visit him and you but the God had His plan. So unfortunate not getting the chance to be with him.

Fred delivered inspiring keynote addresses at many Potomac Region events over the years. Fred and Mary attended many annual dinner functions. Fred was kind to help us in the total revision of the Region Bylaws currently in place since the turn of the new centuary. His deep insight, thoughts,and edits culminated in the model Bylaws providing direction and blueprint for the future professional development and activities.

Potomac Region honored Fred by establishing "The Frederick J. Doyle Potomac Region Student Forum" Awards Program in the George Mason University, Virginia at the Annual Region GeoTech 2010 conference held at the GMU. Fred helped us select three other eminent Region sponsered Student Forums Award nominees and writing their biographies and contributions to the Society. Those are established at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, West Virginia University,and Pennsylvania State University.

Fred was proud of being first graduate of the International Training Center for the Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC)at Delft, the Netherlands,as a Fullbright Fellow. TheITC was founded by the renowned photogrammetrist Prof. Schermerhorn, former prime minister of Netherlands during the second world war. Being myself a ITC alumni much later during 79-81, provided me opportunity to learn from his experience and perspective. Fred had numerous 'first' place in his long distinguished career in the government, academia and the industry. Fred's imprint are everywhere in the lunar,planetary, and terretrial photogrammetric mapping and remotes sensing from space. Fred was awarded Honorary Doctorate degrees in Engineering, Science, and Technology from four universities in the United States and Europe.

We have lost a great patriot, a giant in the field of science and technolgy and the Society. I have lost my mentor and guide. May God bless His soul and grant peace and courage to the family to bear this irreplaceable loss.

Dear Mary and Family,
Fred was a good friend and source of inspiration in my work associated with the promotion of satellite radar. We were once advised by an experienced person on Capitol Hill that we should not venture there without Fred being along. Those were good days working with him. Now I have to rely on what he taught me.

Dear Mrs. Doyle and Family - I want to send you my sincerest condolences for the passing of Fred. I truly enjoyed seeing him on Sunday's when I brought him the Eucharist, and I am ever grateful to you both for your warm greeting and embrace of my father when he was sick and had to move in to live with us. His seeing you at Church and speaking with you at length at coffee and donuts made him feel so at home, during a difficult time - shortly before his passing. I'm sure my dad and Fred are reuniting in heaven now - and perhaps enjoying a donut or two! :)  God Bess!

Dear Mary and Dr. Fred Doyle Jr., and Family: 

My condolences!  Just 3 hours ago, George Lee sent me an e-mail about Fred's passing.  It is so sad for me to hear this that I wanted to cry.  It was my greatest honor to have known both of you and Fred.  Dr. Fred Doyle was a great influence on my life.  He was not only my long-time professional colleague, but he was also my best personal friend. In addition, I respected him as my teacher and mentor.  Because of our mutual profession, in the early days we often saw each other almost every year at technical conferences such as ISPRS and ASPRS everywhere in the world.  Any time I needed help, he was there without reservation. Whenever I was organizing a technical conference or symposium, national or international, for sure, Fred was the first expert invited to speak on analytical photogrammetry. When we worked together as a team, as Chairman of the working group, he designed a metric camera for the Apollo program for mapping the Earth's Moon.  I used all of the metric photographs acquired by Apollo's 15, 16, and 17 to topographically map the Moon using photogrammetry.  Fred and I co-authored a chapter, “Topographic Mapping” of a book: “Planetary Mapping”, which is the Cambridge University  Press- Planetary Science Series No. 6.  I am grateful that Fred introduced me as a candidate for a job when a Space Program initiated by the government of Taiwan.  He also sponsored me for an award from ISPRS.  Lately, I found out that he had even nominated me for membership in the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.  Fred was the only surviving member there representing photogrammetry.  Dr. Fred. Doyle made great contributions to the field of photogrammetry as well as both the national and international societies, ASPRS and ISPRS.  He was very highly respected by followers of photogrammetry.  My proposal to establish the Doyle Silver Award within ISPRS was made possible by the help of Larry Fritz.  Dr. Fred. Doyle will be in my memory forever.

My condolences.  Atef is in decline but you were an important part of his life.  I'm sorry that we
cannot attend.

On behalf of the Potomac Region of ASPRS we send our condolences. Fred was a scholar and gentleman. We are proud that the region has a Student Forum and ASPRS Student Chapter named in his honor that will keep his name and his spirit alive in our region, and in the profession. 
He will be missed by is colleagues and friends and his departure is a sad loss to photogrammetry and the world of remote sensing.
