

On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, Dr. Gary Field died at Fairfax Hospital. A long time resident of McLean, VA. He had been living in Greenspring Village in recent months. Beloved husband of 53 years to Joanne Taylor Field. Father to Kathryn Allison Field of Tonawanda, NY and Elizabeth Field (Matthew) Grove of Arlington, VA. Grandfather to Allison, Brady, and Christian Grove. Born April 8, 1934 in Prairie City, Oregon, to Robert Field and Naomi Stanbro Field. He was raised in Portland, Oregon. Field was a Baker Scholar at Reed College from which he graduated in 1956. While in college, he worked for the US Bank, Oregon legislature and as a fire lookout in the mountains of Oregon. He worked briefly for Senator Richard Neuberger, and then went to the University of Oregon where he earned a MA and PhD in political science. He did his doctoral research in Turkey as a Fulbright Scholar. He later returned to Turkey on a grant at the American Research Institute. He taught at California State in Northridge through the 1960s. In 1970 he came to Washington as an analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency. Just prior to his retirement as a Senior Intelligence Officer in 1997, he was an officer in residence at Oregon State University. He was a member of Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, the Middle East Institute, the American Political Science Association, and the Association of Former Intelligence Officers. A memorial service will be held at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 16, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.
