Gerard was a beloved member of the Bishop O’Connell High School community where he worked for the last 32 years. In 2024, he was recognized as an All-Star faculty member at a wonderful evening gala. In that tribute, the school expressed gratitude for his unwavering commitment, infectious spirit, and the invaluable role he played in shaping the O’Connell experience. Colleagues described him as a beacon of positivity, radiating warmth and creating a sense of belonging for everyone at O’Connell High School.
Gerard was born in New Jersey on April 26, 1967, to Carol Ann (Milioti) Langelier and Robert Michael Langelier. The family moved to Virginia the following year as his father left the U.S. Army Electronics Command in Fort Monmouth for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon. Gerard is predeceased by his father who remained close in Gerard’s heart over the last 50 years since his passing and grounded Gerard’s lifelong interest in NASA and space exploration.
Gerard had a lifelong love of sports. He had an uncanny memory and developed deep knowledge of each of the sports and teams he followed. He particularly enjoyed baseball, football and basketball but even dabbled in swimming, soccer, and golf over the years. He devotedly followed the Washington area professional teams and could frequently be found cheering on the Nationals, Commanders, Wizards, and the many O’Connell teams. He also made a point to return to cheer on his own McLean Highlanders football team where he played from 1983-1986. His treasured 2019 Washington Nationals World Series Champions hat continued to be his favorite, while he also harbored an appreciation and love for the Boston Red Sox as a tribute to his father.
After playing baseball, football and basketball growing up, Gerard volunteered to coach several McLean youth teams. He was a fixture for many years at the McLean Little League field where he was a player, umpire, coach, manager, groundskeeper, and fan. He received a number of plaques and awards from Little League, although coaching his three nephews was among his most treasured experiences.
One of Gerard’s unique qualities was his exceptional memory of family history and his ability to share that history through storytelling that engaged all generations. O’Connell also recognized Gerard’s deep knowledge of the school’s history and intriguing fun facts. In presenting Gerard with the All-Star faculty award, O’Connell remarked that Gerard was able to effortlessly weave through the corridors of time, sharing anecdotes that connect the past and present.
Time in and by the water also brought Gerard joy, especially those times spent with family at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach, Delaware, and at Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. He would never pass up the chance to go off a high dive, do underwater handstands, swim in the Edgewater indoor pool, or enjoy a boat ride with his Uncle Rard.
Family was deeply important to Gerard. He is survived by his mother, Carol; his sister Cynthia Paine of Falls Church, VA; his sister Christina Hamilton (Sean) of Arlington, VA; his brother, Rob Langelier of Half Moon Bay, CA; his nieces and nephews Josh, Shea, Remi and Grady Paine, and Grace and Frances Hamilton; his great-nephews and great-niece, Henry, Jack and Charlotte Paine as well as his devoted McKillop, Milioti, and Sullivan extended family. In addition to his father, he is predeceased by his grandparents, Gerard and Mary (Grady) Langelier of Quincy, MA, and Louis and Florence (Mihalik) Milioti of Daytona, FL.
