Dr. Herbert Edward Lane, Jr., 95, an orthopedic surgeon and longtime resident of McLean, Virginia, died peacefully at home October 30th 2019. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated Brooklyn Preparatory School before entering Georgetown University to complete his undergraduate and medical school degrees.

He was a proud veteran of three branches of the armed services, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard.

After establishing his medical practice in Falls Church, Virginia, he spent 29 years serving as Chief of the Department of Orthopedics at Fairfax Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Lane served as President of the Fairfax Hospital Medical Staff for two terms. He was a member of The Virginia Medical Society for over 50 years.

Herb was married to the love of his life, Marie Polcari Lane, for 56 years. Together they raised three children, MaryPatricia (Lord), H. Edward Lane, III and Robert A. Lane. He was known as “Pa” to four grandchildren. He is survived by his children and their spouses, grandchildren, a sister-in-law in Richmond, Virginia, nieces in New York and New Jersey, and a nephew in North Carolina as well as his devoted housekeeper/caregiver Carmen and her daughter Maria. He was predeceased by his sister Anne (Lennon) and his brother William both of New York.

As a lifetime member of Washington Golf and Country Club Herb enjoyed countless rounds of golf and dinners with cherished friends.

He was a founding member of Saint Luke Catholic Church in McLean where he served as an usher for many years.

A man of many varied talents and interests, he raised horses, was an avid photographer, had an affection for classical music and was an amateur wood craftsman.

He enjoyed traveling abroad including multiple trips to Ireland and he especially delighted in spending time at his home in the Outer Banks of North Carolina where he helped create lasting memories for his family.
