Herbert Wendell Sowers, 93 of Deltona Florida died January 1, 2025, peacefully at home.
Mr. Sowers was born June 26, 1931, in Washington D.C. to the late Thurman Davis Sowers and Allease Ruth (Jones) Sowers. Herb and his wife Gloria moved to Central Florida from Arlington Virginia in 1989 after a 40-year career at the Washington Gas Light Company, retiring as field supervisory manager.
Herb’s hobbies and interests included carpentry, woodworking, gardening and handiwork. He greatly enjoyed helping family and friends with home projects and repairs and assisting his grandchildren with science and social studies projects. Herb loved teaching and sharing his knowledge and passion for construction and handiwork with his children and grandchildren, something that brought him great joy.
Herb was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was an avid football fan, and you could usually find him on fall Sunday afternoons watching his beloved Washington Redskins/Commanders. His 2 favorite NFL teams were Washington and whichever team was playing the Dallas Cowboys!
Herb was a kind and gentle soul with a big heart and love for people. He could get along with anyone and his smile and positive demeanor would light up a room. Herb had a great sense of humor and was known in high school as the class jokester. He was a great listener who left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Herb’ s positive attitude and willingness to help others was always uplifting. His favorite sayings included “Don’t sweat the small stuff”, and “Always take time to stop and smell the roses.”
Herb is survived by his children: Sons William A. Sowers and wife Dawn of Woodbridge, VA, James P. Sowers of Bumpass VA, Richard W. Sowers and wife Nancy of Safety Harbor FL, James C. Marsh Jr. of Culpeper VA, Ronald W. Marsh and wife Cindy of Sarah MS, Daughter Darlene E. Nomina and husband Michael of Deltona FL.
27 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria E. Sowers Sons Robert T. Sowers Roy David, Russell F., Raymond L., and Robert E. Marsh.
Brothers Roy F. Sowers, Marshall Sowers, and Thurman Davis Jr. Sowers Sister Ruth Eleanor Rockwell.
Funeral services to be held at National Funeral Home & Chapel / National Memorial Park 7482 Lee Highway Falls Church, VA on January 17, 2025.
Viewing: Chapel 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Funeral: 1:00pm – 2:00pm
Internment: National Memorial Park 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Reception to immediately follow at the James Room, National Funeral Home from 3:00 – 5:00pm
