

Jack W. Carney, Age 87, of Falls Church, Virginia, passed away Thursday, April 2nd, 2015. He was born in Whitaker, Pennsylvania on July 3rd, 1927 to John and Irene (Puskas) Carney.
Jack graduated from Washington & Lee High School in 1947 where he starred as a multisport athlete. He attended American University. After a stint in professional baseball with the St. Louis Browns Baseball Club, Jack returned to Northern Virginia to work for the family home building and land development company Carney-Drew Homes.
In the 1970’s Jack became the President of the Route 50-66 Association pulling together landowners and citizen’s groups that led the way for the future development of Fair Oaks Area, Fairfax Center Area and other projects throughout Western Fairfax County. During the late 1980’s Jack partnered with Next Generation Companies of Fairfax, developing several real estate projects in Northern Virginia, including over 500 home building sites, an apartment project, Wegman’s Grocery Store (Fairfax), and several childcare centers.
Jack, along with his uncle Ted Puskas and business partners formed The Carney Foundation. This Foundation supports young athletes, male and female, in their personal development towards a successful adult life. Jack was active personally and through the Foundation, working closely with Fairfax County Park Authority in field development and maintenance and remained financially supportive of several youth organization in all age groups.
In retirement Jack enjoined sponsoring a summer collegiate wood bat baseball team called the “Carney Pirates”. He also spent numerous pleasurable hours at his other home in Piney Point, MD.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation/Gathering of family and friends will be Wednesday, April 8th, from 1 to 2 pm, with a Christian Funeral Service at 2pm, all in the Chapel at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Fall Church, VA 22042. In lieu of flowers, “Do Like Jack”, make a donation to a charity of one’s choice or volunteer to make a difference in the life of someone less fortunate.
