James, or Dennis as he was affectionately known, held deep affection for those closest to him. His family was a central part of his life, a source of comfort, support, and shared experiences that shaped who he was. He and his wife, Jackie, especially loved supporting and attending their sons’ soccer and lacrosse games. Fatherly pride was forever present. This love of family was manifested in countless ways, from simple daily interactions to grander celebrations and traditions. For decades, his home in McLean was the gathering place for what was, and always will be known as the ‘Frew Family Christmas Party.’ He cherished his connections with his sisters-in-law, his nieces, nephews, cousins, his sons’ friends; these bonds were such an important part in his life's journey.
His friendships were equally important to him. His childhood, time at the University of Maryland, years of service in the United States Navy, and his professional pursuits thereafter, all proved to be fertile ground for developing life-long friendships. He invested time and energy in nurturing these relationships built on mutual respect, shared interests, and unwavering support. These weren't just casual acquaintances; they were individuals he confided in, laughed with, and relied on through thick and thin. He valued their presence in his life, understanding that true friendship enriches one's existence immeasurably.
Dennis also had a huge soft spot for his cats. These weren't just pets; they were family, offering unconditional love, playful antics, and quiet moments of solace. Cali, Spike, Thomas, Alex, Bear, Sugar...he appreciated each of their unique personalities, finding joy in every interaction, even when that involved them scaling the sides of the upholstered couches and chairs! They were more than just a part of the household.
However, it was cycling that truly set his spirit free. This wasn't just a hobby; it was a passion. The simple act of pedaling, feeling the wind against his face, and exploring the world on two wheels brought him immense joy. Cycling provided him with a unique perspective, allowing him to connect with his surroundings in a way that few other activities could.
It wasn't just about the physical act of cycling; it was about the experiences it afforded him and the relationships he built along the way. He advocated for cyclist access to local roads and cyclist safety, volunteering countless hours to the improvement of local bike paths and infrastructure.
He embarked on adventures near and far.
Each journey, whether it was to Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, or just down the road in the Shenandoah Valley, was a new chapter, a chance to explore, discover, and grow. Along the way, he met like-minded individuals, people who shared his passion for cycling and adventure. Initially, they were simply 'cycling buddies,' sharing miles and stories, but over time, they became dear friends, bound by shared experiences and a mutual love for the freedom of two wheels.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Dennis served his country with honor, retiring as an Aviation Fire Control Technician (AQ2, E-5). During his service, he undertook intelligence-gathering flights along enemy borders—missions fraught with danger that tested the courage and resolve of the entire crew. True to his nature, Dennis was a steadfast source of strength for his fellow service members, offering unwavering support in even the most challenging moments.
Following his military career, Dennis seamlessly transitioned into a distinguished career as a Patent Attorney for the Office of Naval Research. There, he combined his passion for creativity and innovation with an unshakable commitment to teamwork and excellence, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
Dennis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jacqueline Frew, whose memory he held dear, and his brother, David Frew. He is survived by his two sons, Kevin Frew (Wife, Michelle) and Michael Frew, both of Fairfax, VA, his son by choice Kenny Crenshaw of Sterling, VA, as well as his sister, Donna Butcher, (Husband, Michael) of Saratoga, CA. He also leaves behind a large extended family and a circle of loyal friends.
Dennis touched the lives of so many with his gentle heart, kindness, warmth, and unwavering spirit. His presence brought light to all who knew him, and his memory will remain a source of strength and inspiration to all those left behind. His life was a testament to the value of service, the joy of shared experiences, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Murphy's Funeral Home, located at 1102 W. Broad Street Falls Church, VA 22046. Family and friends will begin gathering at 10:30 AM, with the formal service commencing at 12:30 PM.
