

Joan Nancy Crane Vorobey died on January 12, 2026 at the age of 98, in Baltimore, Maryland. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Nancy Margaret Vorobey, of Baltimore, Maryland, nieces Phyllis Ann Devlin, Margaret Eser, Martha Kriener, nephew Christofer Devlin and their children. Mrs. Vorobey was born on July 14, 1927, at Walter Reed Army Hospital. She came to live in Arlington, Virginia in 1939 upon the retirement of her Father, Lt. Col. Frank A. Crane, from the U.S. Army Dental Corp. She attended Washington-Lee High School, graduating in 1945. She attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. earning a B.A. On June 2, she married her beloved husband, Lt. Alexander Vorobey, at the Fort Myer Chapel. Her husband was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, serving in the 7th Armored Division and was ordered to Korea in September, 1950. Their daughter, Nancy Margaret, was born on October 8, 1950. Lt. Vorobey, who was killed in action in January 1951, was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star posthumously. Mrs. Vorobey began teaching in the Alexandria City School System as a Speech Therapist in 1954. She continued her teaching career as a Speech Therapist and a Hearing Specialist in the Fairfax County Public Schools during which time she earned her Master’s Degree from George Washington University in 1969. She retired in 1982 after 28 years as an educator. In retirement, Mrs. Vorobey was a member of the National Enamellist’s Guild for 16 years. In 1989, she joined the Washington National Cathedral where she served first as a volunteer Docent and then paid Staff Aide for 25 years. She cherished this service as the most rewarding of her lifetime. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gilchrist Hospice, Hunt Valley, Maryland, or to the Salvation Army.
