

John E. Carey, age 65, of Annandale, VA, passed away on September 19, 2019. John is survived by his wife, Hong Lien; stepdaughter, Dawn (Hung); and siblings: Tom (Edie), Pam Batz (Bill), and Beth Kish (Steve). One brother, Bill (Gayle) is deceased. He was the son of the late Arthur F. and Marie Corby Carey of Rocky River, Ohio. John was a graduate of Gilmour Academy ’72 and the University of Notre Dame ‘76 where he was in R.O.T.C. and was commissioned an officer. John served on land and at sea in the U.S. Navy for twenty years and attained the rank of Commander. During his naval service, he participated in Operation Desert Storm, served at the Pentagon, and commanded the USS Curtis Wilbur. His awards included the Navy League’s Stephen Decatur Award for Operational Excellence, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. John also received a Master’s Degree in International Relations & Strategic Studies at the Naval War College in 1992. After his military service, he worked as a defense consultant, freelance writer, and taught community college. Visitation will take place at the National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA on Friday, October 4 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be at Holy Martyrs of Vietnam Catholic Church, 915 South Wakefield Street, Arlington, VA on Saturday, October 5 at 10:00AM.
