You have left a lasting impression on me John. You mentored me in so many ways. I am who I am today because of you.

I knew John as Lt. John Carey aboard the USS Ranger in late 1979 through mid 1980 when I left the service.

Astute would be an understatement.

Lt. Carey conducted himself in a manner worthy of the respect of any seaman/fireman at a relatively junior officer's rank. This definitely was NOT the case with many of a similar status. The difference between John and many other officers was conspicuous to any enlisted capable of appreciating it.

Exemplary would also be an understatement.

I just learned of John's death and submit this tribute with gratitude:

One day in the Persian Gulf, John found me in my stateroom in tears after some mail brought relationship troubles. He spent some time with me being a chaplain to this chaplain. In later years I wrote him in appreciation of his nationally syndicated articles on national defense and policy, and he asked to be friends on Facebook. With Hong Lien, he was active in his Christian faith and, according to the U.S. Naval Institute, “did extensive research on the chaplains and nuns of the Civil War and Old West.”  His fascinating article, “Henry Vinton Plummer: Slave, Sailor, Minister, and Chaplain,” appeared in the February 2004 issue of Proceedings.  He wrote many Civil War articles for various publications, perhaps most notably in 2008, “Father William Corby of the Irish Brigade,” which detailed Chaplain Corby’s support of the Union Army through many battles.  His absolution blessing of the gathered thousands of soldiers before the second day of Gettysburg was so moving and memorable that a statue at the battlefield commemorates the moment.  John’s mother, Marie Corby Carey, was a niece of the Irish Brigade’s chaplain.  John’s full circle of life, from Notre Dame to notable Naval service, to becoming a persuasive national voice for well-reasoned and provisioned defense, to plumbing history for its lessons and spiritual sustenance, recommend him to our attention and praise.  For us of Leyte Gulf, he will always be our shipmate.  I thank God for John.

We served together on board USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55).  I was a young junior officer and he was the Executive Officer.  I remember him so well, both in the lead up to Desert Storm, and then during it. He took me under his wing, a bit, which I appreciated so much. We even shared some jokes on more than one occasion. He also helped me out, personally helped me with something personal that I really, desperately needed help with. I found it incredibly hard to ask for help, but he was there when I needed that help, and I'll always be so very grateful to him for that. More than I can say. He was a very good man. Rest in peace, Commander. You'll be remembered well.

I attended St. Christopher School for 8 wonderful years with John.   In 8 years I never  ever remember John being mean or saying anything nasty.  John was always kind and courteous.  John was always a gentleman.

One of the earliest memories I have of my Uncle must have been when I was no older than five. I had received a set of miniature zoo animals for Christmas that year and had arranged them nicely on the coffee table in the family room. 

I vividly remember that the animals had moved around the room after I had left for a few minutes. My Uncle, being the funny guy he was, had moved them and spent the night convincing me that the animals had moved all on their own. His sense of humor and whimsical, kind nature will be missed. 

Dear Friend,
You taught me about humility ;you taught me about God; you taught me about service.  You  were so loved. I will never forget our friendship.
