

Born in Annapolis, Maryland, John Francis Nowell remained connected to his roots in the Chesapeake Bay area. He received his B.S. from the University of Maryland at College Park and his M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed an internship at the U.S. Naval Medical School in Bethesda. His residency-fellowship in ophthalmology was on the Louisiana State University service of the Charity Hospital in New Orleans.
Dr. Nowell opened a private practice of ophthalmic medicine and surgery in Northern Virginia. His notable career accomplishments included election to the highest offices in professional medical associations until his retirement in 1995. He served as President of the Arlington County Medical Society, the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology, and the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology. He was Chief of Medical Staff and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Northern Virginia Doctors’ Hospital, and Chief of the Section on Ophthalmology of the Southern Medical Association.
John served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. A craftsman and artisan, he could design and build cabinetry or architect a house. He was highly mechanically inclined. He was a Terrapin Club member supporting the U of MD and a sports fan. John had a passion for music and the performing arts. A gifted singer, he enjoyed performing with the Falls Church Music Club. He epitomized the modern notion of a Renaissance man.
John placed his family first and foremost always in his life. He was an active presence and supporter of bands for each of his daughters and grandchildren who all achieved advanced wind instrument excellence. His dedication as a medical healer and family man was unwavering. He was an inspiration of compassion, honor and integrity to all.
A private memorial service will occur at a later date. Interment will be at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA.
