Nécrologie de Julia Ann Treagy
Devoted U.S. Navy wife, mother, and grandmother, Julia Ann Treagy (née Drenning) died on May 9, 2021 at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, VA, after a long and courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). She was 82 years old. Born in Dayton, Ohio to Carl Drenning and Charlotte Barker Drenning, Julia graduated from Annandale High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Theatre from American University. After marrying Captain Paul Everett Treagy in 1962, the couple lived in Annapolis, MD, Newport, RI, Coronado, CA, Hawaii, and Japan before settling down in Northern VA. People knew Julia as a woman of grace, elegance, and patience, but she was equally adventurous, brave, and spirited. She possessed an uncommon perseverance and positive outlook that braced her for life’s storms, whether that be managing frequent relocations or suffering a life-altering stroke at age 40. The daughter of a librarian, Julia was erudite, witty, and well-versed in current affairs, including politics. She was an avid reader, and particularly enjoyed poetry, mysteries, and the daily newspaper. She believed that giving was a blessing to the giver, and taught her children to be independent, generous, and kind. She herself was all of these things. A Disability Services Board member and advocate, Julia also volunteered with Annandale Christian Community for Action, Northern Virginia Family Services, and The Shepherd’s Center. She took great pride in her work as a lay reader at Sleepy Hollow United Methodist Church. Predeceased by her husband, Julia is survived by her brother, Patrick Drenning; her son, Michael; her daughter, Carrie (Gary); as well as three grandchildren and many cherished friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CurePSP, 1216 Broadway, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10001, or Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) Inc., Suite 300, 7200 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003. Julia will be honored with a Memorial Service on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow United Methodist Church, 3435 Sleepy Hollow Road, Falls Church, VA 22044. Her ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. To livestream these services, please see the livestream links in the services section of this page.
