Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Lily Sheng-Lin Liang of Vienna, Virginia, passed away at age 79 on June 29, 2025, with her family by her side. She had been fighting liver cancer at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.
Lily was born on October 29, 1945, in Hunan, China, the fifth of twelve children. She moved with her family to Taiwan in 1949. A superb student, she earned her Bachelor’s in Accounting from National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan. She worked as a teacher and accountant in Taipei for 8 years. In 1976, she married Stephen Shao-Liang Liang and immigrated to the United States.
Settling in Northern Virginia, Lily continued her accounting career at Trinity College in Washington, DC, and Quest Diagnostics in Virginia, retiring in 2010. She loved music and singing, helping found Li Ren Chorus in 1993. She remained a member of the chorus for over 30 years, serving multiple terms as President, Treasurer, and in other roles. For many years, she was a teacher and an administrator for Wei-Hwa Chinese School and Li-Ren Chinese School, where her children studied Chinese. A practitioner of Tai-Chi and Yuan Chi Dance, she trained weekly and later taught classes. An avid volunteer, she worked with senior citizens and supported the work of the international charity group Tzu Chi Foundation. She put in a lot of volunteer and training hours to be certified as a commissioner of Tzu Chi, which was a great accomplishment as she started when she was 68 years old. Lily was a proud overseas alumna of Cheng Kung University, serving on the alumni association board, and organized national and international class reunions.
After her husband Stephen passed in 1989, she single-handedly raised their two children, June and Stephen II, while still working full-time. Lily loved gardening and taking care of her plants and vegetables, inside and outside. She honed her crafting skills such as traditional Chinese papercutting, gifting many of her creations to family and friends. After retirement, she spent time in Connecticut enjoying the company of her grandsons, teaching them Chinese.
Lily was preceded in death by her parents, Ding and Ching-Yun He Lo; husband, Stephen Liang, and brother, Michael Lo. She is survived by her children, June (Bryant) and Stephen II; grandsons Albert, Wyatt, and Emmett; 10 brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
A memorial will be held at National Funeral Home at 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Virginia, 22042, on Monday, July 7th at 10:00 AM. Please join us for a dim sum lunch immediately following at Peter Chang's (6715 Lowell Avenue, McLean, VA 22101).
