Lucho passed away on November 9, 2021, after a valiant ten-year battle with esophageal cancer. Just as he dealt with all life’s challenges, Lucho managed his illness with strength and grace. He was determined to spend as much time as possible with his beloved wife, Teresa Cuellar de Zarate, family, and close friends. On his final day, he was surrounded by his wife; his daughter and son and their spouses, and his little sister, Hortencia, the people he loved more than anything else in the world.
Born in La Paz, Bolivia on May 18, 1953, Lucho was the second son of 5 children. He graduated from the Universidad Mayor de San Simon and went on to become an accomplished financial auditor. Lucho married Teresa, the love of his life, in 1982. He, Teresa and their little daughter Monica, immigrated to the United States in 1986. Besides spending time with family and friends, Lucho loved music – Santana, The Gipsy Kings and Rod Stewart were favorites – and working crossword puzzles. He was dedicated to his family and his faith.
Lucho is survived by his wife Teresa, his daughter; Monica Iskander, her partner Michael Iskander and their children, Nico and Bella, his son, Malcolm Cuellar, Malcolm’s partner Michelle and their sons, Tony and Liam, his siblings Carmen, Hugo, Hortencia and Juan Jose Zarate, nieces, nephews and many friends. He will live on in our hearts.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 3:00 on Friday, November 19, 2021, at the Duran family home. The Duran’s were Lucho’s dearest friends; Ronald was a brother to him, and Sra. Angelica a second mother. Friends and family are invited to join in a reception and celebration of Lucho’s life immediately following the mass, from 4pm-6pm, at the same location.
