Margaret Ann Polk North (Maggie) was born in Washington DC, to the late William and Hallie May Park on May 3, 1936. A graduate of Blair High School, she went on to attend the University of Maryland where she met her husband, John William Polk. She was the quintessential volunteer. She gave of her time and her heart to Gaithersburg Help, the American Red Cross, and Meals on Wheels. She served countless hours in so many ways for her churches, Mill Creek Parish in Derwood, MD, and Little Chapel on the Boardwalk in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Later in life, she was a docent for the Latimer House in Wilmington, NC. And who knows what other charitable deeds she did because she didn’t brag about it. It’s just what you do. Maggie took up golf as her first husband, Jack, was an avid golfer. She was lucky enough to travel the world with her second husband Chuck. She walked with the penguins in Antarctica, visited with Maasai Warriors in Kenya, fought the insects in the Amazon, and drank Kava in Fiji. Maggie was a voracious reader. Even in her last days when she could barely hold a book, she was reading. But her real talent was Bridge. Her reputation as a stellar Bridge player was well known.
Maggie is preceded in death by her first husband, John William Polk, and her second husband, Charles Wright North Jr.
She is survived by her siblings: Mary Jo Scarbath (Dick), Bill Park (Rita), Tom Park (Carol), and Hallie May Galloway (Jim); her children: Sharon Bear (Jim), Debbie Garbers, Lori Richardson (Steve), Suzi Pease, John Polk (Martha); and her stepchildren: Cindy North, Charles Wright North IV (Deborah), and Mark North (Mori). She was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Grandma Who Who and Omma. She loved sharing in all the joys and celebrations of her grandchildren: Todd Bear (Angie), Caitlyn Wilson (Kris), Corey Garbers, Tyler (Liz), Carter, and Cameron Pease, Jack and Meredith Polk, Chad North (Kira), Marisa North, and Christopher North (Dora), Kaitlyn Watkins (Bill), and Shirlea North. She was great grandma to 10.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Margaret Ann’s name may be made to Meals on Wheels (weekendmealsonwheels.org), Pancreatic Cancer (support.pancan.org/goto/Maggie), or Miles of Scarves (milesofscarves.org/donate): a charity that her granddaughter, Meredith, created to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis Research.
Services will be held at Mill Creek Parish United Methodist Church, 7101 Horizon Court, Derwood, MD, on Saturday March 26th, at 2 PM.
