It was a sunny day in July,2019...the Fourth,to be exact.My husband and I were at the Jefferson Memorial,wandering about, and getting ready for the festivities, when a lovely lady engaged us in conversation.And that is how we met our long-distance friend,Mona.We stood together for the fireworks, and met another new friend,Jon.We all had a marvelous time getting to know one another.And when it was all over,Mona insisted on driving us the few miles to our vehicle.Now she is home with our Lord.We are in shock,having just seen her obituary.Yet we rejoice, knowing that Mona has seen the face of God. Our prayers are with all of her family.We will never forget her....what a beautiful soul....

My Ninang Mona, she was a loving, generous, hilarious, adventurous, ambitious, kind, honest human being. Sometimes a pain in the butt, but it came from the heart & with love. She was one of the most important people in my life. She taught me how to be confident, strong, forgiving, stress-free & how to live life fearless. She was the one I went to when I needed advice or if I did not know how to get through an obstacle life threw at me. Reminiscing twenty-two years of good times & bad times that I will deeply cherish all the memories we have created especially that contagious laughter of yours & you singing Blue Bayou in the background. I have not quite, but am trying to accept that you are no longer here with us because a piece of my heart was ripped out. Nevertheless I am thankful & grateful that you have entered my life & have made it better, you will always have the spot of being my second mother. And just know we are all here watching over Ninong Flor & Francis, like how you are watching over all of us. I will miss your beautiful soul, your gorgeous face & your words of wisdom. I am so grateful to have had the honor of meeting such a beautiful, funny,  and caring woman. Thank you for immediately welcoming me into your family and showing me unconditional love regardless of how you felt. We will all  miss you 

Mona came into our lives when she married my uncle Tito Flor in 1994.  We were immediately drawn to her contagious laughter, vivacious personality and her caring ways.  
Mona was a devoted mother to her son Francis whose achievements she was very proud of.  She was most proud of the fact that Francis built a computer when he was only 13 years old!  She was excited when Francis bought a car through his own earnings and that he added bells and whistles to it all by himself. 
Mona was a devoted wife to Tito Flor.  She whole heartedly supported his deep interest in dancing and swimming. She made sure that he was comfortable and had what he needed. Mona saved Tito Flor from a leg amputation. She was so panicked and concerned about his leg being amputated because he will no longer be able to dance!  Mona defied the doctors and hospital personnel who were ready to amputate and moved him to another hospital. 
Mona was a dedicated, hardworking supervisor of Guest Services in Jefferson Memorial. She would share with me her thoughts on inspiring those who work with her to achieve excellence. Through the years she and her team received awards for exceptional customer service and keeping the appearance of their gift shop fresh and appealing. 
Mona always made sure that she, Tito Flor and Francis were able to attend our family gatherings. And never mind that she would drive the extra miles and fight through traffic to bring a bushel of crabs in her trunk for every gathering.  She knew we enjoyed them. Somehow her stories along with her contagious laugh and “joie de vivre” made eating those crabs with her even more enjoyable. Sometimes Mona would sing “Blue Bayou” on the karaoke for us. What a voice.  The best rendition of the song bar none! 
Mona, we love you and we will miss you.  We feel a void in our hearts. May you rest in eternal peace.  Know that we will always be here for Tito Flor and Francis.

Mona was my best friend, but we treated each other as real sisters.
I would like to say a few words about her. Mona is a loving person. She devoted her life to her family, husband and son. She’s one of the kindest and most sincere person I know.
Mona and I had a lot of things in common and I don’t remember an instance that we had conflicts or any disagreements. We went to different places together, and now that she’s gone, I felt like I was left alone.
For more than 10 years, we shared everything that 2 girl friends can share. For her, I was the person she turned to when things got rough, and she let me into her inner world, into her mind, and deepest corners of her soul. So did I.
It has been hard thinking on what to say because I couldn’t find the exact words to describe our relationship and all the feelings involved in it. Somehow, it is easier to just sit and cry in the dark than to do this at last.
I am grieving, but i learned that grief is another form of love. We grieve because we had the opportunity of connecting deeply with another human. I will miss her dearly, and I’m so grateful having known her.
To anyone who experienced loss- just know that understanding your emotions, not suppressing them and dealing with it in healthy ways will help you move through grief at your own pace. Take your time and give yourself all the space you need. Whatever you are feeling is valid and the loss will stay with you. I think of her all the time. When it hits you hard, all you can do is remember the memories and lessons, and honor the memory of the person by striving to be your best.
To you Mona, I love you and goodbye for now, until we meet again.

I will always honor the memory of tita Mona by remembering her strong spirit and positive energy,  her welcoming hospitality in their Virginia home, her easy personality, practical advises, that trademark laugh, and most especially for her genuine kindness.  Salamat sa tanan tita Mona. We will miss you dearly. 


I knew Mona through her position at the Jefferson Memorial gift shop.  My husband Marc (who passed away last August) was a business associate of Mona’s.  She was also a dear friend of his, always kind and supportive.  I loved going to the shop to make deliveries with Marc and visiting Mona.  She was a sweet, warm person and will certainly be missed.

I first met Mona 11 years ago when I moved to DC from NY. Mona was the first friend I made in DC. We joked that I was her adopted son. She would take me on family trips with her husband Mr Cruz, her son Francis and best friend Manny. Mona made me feel welcome at a time when I felt so homesick. She was a good friend and she will be missed. 

Mona was the first person to welcome us to the neighborhood when we moved in 12 years ago,and kept us under her wing for a good while until we knew our way around. She enthusiastically arranged and participated in multiple neighborhood potlucks and helped us get to know our other neighbors. She bought Girl Scout cookies from my daughters every year and let us know which were her son's favorite. 

We miss her terribly, and now it's time to step up and be there for her husband and son. With the help of God we can get through this most difficult test together.
