

Marianne Freytag Barrick of Sterling, Virginia passed away on May 27th, 2023. Marianne was the daughter of Anton H. Freytag and Dorothy Reinhardt. She grew up in New Jersey and later moved to Virginia. She was a dedicated schoolteacher at St. James Catholic School, where she taught science for many years. Marianne organized a yearly science fair, coached her students through regional and district science fairs, and won awards to the Florida Keys and St. Louis where she met Bob Ballad, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Mr. Wizard. The science lab at St. James was dedicated in her honor in 2007.
Marianne was active in the community for most of her adult life and served as the President of the Ladies Auxiliary Samarians of the Knights of Columbus, and the choir director at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church. Marianne loved reading, gardening, and baking. Her family will never forget baking stollen and thumbprint cookies with her as well as making miniature sculptures out of marzipan during the holidays. Marianne is survived by her husband, daughter, and two grandchildren.
