Mary Alice Carroll

Mary Alice Carroll, known by many as Sally, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Canton, GA, on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020, lovingly surrounded by her children and extended family members. She was 89 years old. Sally was born on July 2, 1930, in Colorado Springs, CO, to Bernard Joseph and Mary Ellen Fitzgerald. It was also there that she married Gerard Clement Carroll (Gerry or Ger-Babe) on September 16, 1950. Sally, lovingly referred to as The GOAT (Greatest of all Time), was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard, in 2008. They had 12 children. One son, Timothy Gerard, died in infancy at one month of age. Sally is survived by her 11 children—Anne Marie Keller (Mike) of Overland Park, KS; Christopher William Carroll (Deb) of Bristow, VA; Susan Kathleen Bracht (Pancho) of Centerville, VA; Joseph Fitzgerald Carroll (Terri) of Alpharetta, GA; Michael Dennis Carroll (Donna) of Springfield, VA; Therese Caroline Burke (Robert, deceased) of Annandale, VA; Thomas Gerard Carroll (Terri) of Canton, GA; Bernadette Carroll Waugh (John) of McLean, VA; James Bernard Carroll (Krissy) of Glen Allen, VA; Stephen Patrick Carroll (Leigh Ann) of Williamsburg, VA; Jennifer Joan Kenney (Scott) of Canton, GA; her 34 grandchildren; and her 27 great-grandchildren. Sally and Gerry lived in Springfield, VA, for more than 60 years. Following her many years of being a stay-at-home mom, and after her husband’s retirement from the FBI, she began a banking career that spanned 27 years of service. Her proudest accomplishment was, undoubtedly, the family she created with Gerry. They loved each other deeply and with an immense respect for each other. Their strong Catholic faith guided their decisions in life, and they were active parishioners of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Springfield. They enjoyed getting together with friends and traveling throughout the country, to sporting events, and to summer beach reunions. Perhaps their favorite pastime was witnessing the close bonds between their children, who refer to themselves as the Lucky 12. Following Gerry’s death, Sally moved to Canton, GA, to live with her youngest daughter, Jenn, dubbed Jennifer the Magnificent by her father. Jenn and her husband, Scott, welcomed Sally to their home and busy life, and she loved being a part of it. She never knew a stranger and was embraced by all their friends and community. Everyone loved Grammy Sally. Sally was a quiet, gentle, kind, selfless, and wonderfully devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her compassion, acceptance, and understanding were legendary. She was simply a beautiful person inside and out.
