Mary was born in Chania, Crete, Greece on June 4, 1940. The oldest of the four siblings, Mary was always a nurturer and protector of those around her. Mary was the first of immediate family to come to the United States at the age of 8. Always a brave and strong woman, she faced many challenges in her early years. However, no hardship she faced hardened her beautiful, resolute soul.
In 1976 Mary opened Table Talk restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband, Mo Movahed. Together they worked hard, forged life-long friendships and traveled the world. They had many more plans after selling the restaurant that were not able to come to fruition due to Mary’s various health issues. The greatest joys they experienced in their free time involved spending time with their family.
First and foremost, Mary was a dedicated and adoring mother to her children Nick, Stella and Ava. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as yiayia. With her vivacious personality, she always made people around her feel welcome and loved. Holidays were frequently hosted by Mary in her warm home. Her door was always open and extended family often stayed with her for long visits when they came to town.
She is proceeded in death by her parents Dimitri and Eleni Manousakis. She is survived by her loving husband Mo Movahed and her children Nick Kapetanakis, Stella Dumka and Ava Walter. Her grandchildren loved her very much. She is also survived by her siblings Tina Katsikis, Ted Manousakis and Georgia Papadopoulos.
We could write an entire book highlighting Mary’s accomplishments and love. She will always be remembered with great love and fondness.
Visitation will be on Saturday December 11 at 9:30 a.m. with funeral service immediately following at 10:30 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 7701 Bradley Blvd Potomac, MD 20817. Burial at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA.
