AVIS DE DÉCÈS

Mohamed A Wasfy

2 octobre 1938 – 14 avril 2025
Avis de décès de Mohamed A Wasfy
AUX SOINS DE

National Funeral Home & Memorial Park

Mohamed Abdel-Aziz Ahmed Wasfy

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Born in Cairo, Egypt on October 2, 1938 and died April 14, 2025 after a short and sudden illness. He went to the United States in 1968 to attend graduate school in economics in Missouri. In 1972, he moved to Washington and started a 33-year career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He held a variety of roles including assistant to the executive director, senior economist, and assistant division director at the IMF and worked in over 50 countries.

Mohamed was an extraordinarily devoted father and husband. Throughout his life, he constantly prioritized his family in a selfless way. After marrying Catherine Harmon in 1975, Catherine and Mohamed had two boys. Jason, born in 1979, is a cardiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. Justin, born 1983, is a first vice president at Merrill Lynch.

He had truly astonishing, magnetic charisma. Anyone from finance ministers on his IMF missions or his sons’ childhood friends were disarmed by his warm interpersonal perceptiveness and kind humor. Even as he slowly slipped into more advanced Alzheimer’s disease over the past 10 years, he still knew how to insert a quick comment to lift others’ spirits or share sage advice.

Mohamed is survived by his wife of 50 years, Catherine (Harmon) Wasfy, his sons Dr. Jason Wasfy and Justin Wasfy, their wives Dr. Meagan (Murphy) Wasfy and Monica (Huftalen) Wasfy, and 4 grandchildren, David, Charlotte, James, and Elizabeth. As the longest surviving of 5 siblings, he also has been a source of support, wisdom, and kindness for beloved nephews and nieces throughout the United States, Canada, and Egypt.

Laid to rest in a private ceremony at Arnon Cemetery in Great Falls, Virginia. Plans for a memorial reception to be announced later this year.
