

Clay was born in Petersburg, VA , May 22,1927. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served on the USS Runels during WWII. He was in Tokyo Bay at the time of signing of the Instrument of Surrender formally ending WWII.
Clay returned to Petersburg to complete high school, where he met his future wife, Maxine. He would return to the Navy to serve in the Korean War.
He married Maxine September 11, 1948. He attended University of Richmond to peruse an education in electronic engineering.
They would make their home in Northern VA, where they raised their 4 children. In 1989, Clay retired from E-Systems and he and Maxine would settle in retirement in Kill Devil Hills, NC, where he enjoyed golfing, gardening and eating anything sweet.
Aside from his wife and son he was preceded in death by his mother Blanche Sheffield, stepfather Robert L Sheffield and brother James L. King, Jr.
He leaves behind 3 devoted daughters Karen Lynn King-Jones, Lisa King Park (Christopher), Laurie King Klakamp (Don). His grandchildren, Roger Jones Jr. (Nikki), Richard Gann, Gary Jones (Karen), Timothy Jones (Kathy), and Shelby Park. 3 great-grandchildren Skyler Heath-Jones, Greyson Jones, Reagan Jones and a host of step grandchildren.
In Lieu of flowers the family request donations to Kill Devil Hills NC Fire and Rescue Dept.
