

Patrick William McDonough of McLean, VA died on Monday, February 5, 2018 after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer for two and a half years. At 68 years old, Patrick was born on June 24, 1949, to the late Walter Gerard McDonough and the late Eileen (Sherry) McDonough, both of Lowell, MA. Patrick and his siblings grew up in Dracut, MA. He graduated from high school at Keith Academy in Lowell, and received both his undergraduate and his law degree from Boston College. He went on to receive his Masters of Laws (LLM) degree from Georgetown University Law.
Patrick leaves behind his devoted wife of 37 years, Mary Ellen McDonough, and their three children: Allison B. Blaisdell (Tim) of Burke, VA; Megan E. McDonough (Diego Saez-Gil) of Boulder Creek, CA; and Brendan M. McDonough of McLean, VA; and his two granddaughters, Natalie and Caroline Blaisdell. He is survived by four siblings and their families: Thomas J. McDonough (Deborah Burkholder) of Methuen, MA; Emmett E. McDonough (Dana) of Newburgh, NY; Walter G. McDonough of Rockville, MD; and Mary Lagasse (James) of Dracut, MA; and six nieces and nephews.
Patrick worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC for 40 years as the former Director of Practice, and the former Executive Director of the Joint Board Enrollment of Actuaries. He held the latter position for many years, and held that position through his retirement in January 2017.
Patrick served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and retired as a Colonel. Because of his outstanding professional achievements and contributions to the Marine Corps Law of War unit, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. He was a dedicated Marine and maintained a strong friendship with wonderful friends from the Marine Corps. He enjoyed a hobby of collecting Marine Corps and Navy militaria and going to militaria shows.
Patrick had a strong community spirit and volunteered for many years with the McLean Little League, as a team manager, coach, and umpire. He served on the Board of McLean Little League and was invited to the Spring 2017 Opening Day Ceremonies to receive recognition to be added to the McLean Little League Honor Roll. On a previous year he was invited to throw the first pitch at the Opening Day games and also received a “brick” in his name at the Little League field.
Visitation hours are Sunday, February 11 from 2PM– 5PM at Murphy’s Funeral Home in Falls Church, VA. The funeral Mass is Monday, February 12 at 11AM at St. Luke Catholic Church in McLean, VA. Burial follows at Fairfax Memorial Park.
