On Saturday afternoon, August 27th, just as Danbury Forest was anxiously awaiting Hurricane Irene, one of our original and most loyal residents, Sara Stone, passed away peacefully during a nap at home. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease a few years ago, but did not want to leave her beloved home here in Danbury Forest. Sara moved into her new town house in 1974, and with the help of her family and friends, she was able to stay living here just like she wanted.
Sara had retired from the Fairfax County School system as a librarian quite a few years ago, but kept busy by volunteering at the Treasure Trove, volunteering at Wakefield Rec. Center and volunteering in Danbury Forest. Sara worked (for the benefit of all home owners) at least a dozen years on the DFCA Maintenance Committee and actually chaired that committee for a while. She supported the community in so many ways. Sara was a fixture at the lower Uxbridge block parties and was always willing to pitch in where she could. She bought flowers from the Garden Club and bought whatever the kids were selling at school. She always had a smile and time to chat or share a friendly toddy with her neighbors. She distributed compliments abundantly.
Sara loved staying close with her family, taking care of her pets, feeding the forest birds, playing bridge, reading a good book, traveling with friends, and especially loved her home in Danbury Forest. She kept her house very nice and always had one of the most beautiful yards in the neighborhood.
Her family is planning a special remembrance on Saturday, September 17th. For those who would like to attend, there will be a short commitment service at National Memorial Park at 2:00pm. The address is 7482 Lee High-way, Falls Church. Immediately following will be a celebration at the American Legion Hall in Annandale from 2:30 - 5:00pm. The American Legion Post 1976 is located at 4206 Daniels Avenue, Annandale. They would like all who knew her to come by and share a story or two and help them celebrate her life. Sara was 81 years old, a great neighbor, and a fun friend. She really loved life and gave so much to our community.
Rest in peace Sara – Danbury Forest will miss you.
