Vincent William McAlevy passed away on August 25, 2023. He was born on September 19, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were George and Magdelena (DeJon) McAlevy, and his siblings were Robert, Henry and Mary (Lowe). He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Annette (Schiffgens) McAlevy, his sons Timothy, Kevin and his wife Mary Grace McAlevy, Brian and his wife Mary McAlevy, and five grandsons, Connor, Brendan, Sean, Rory and Declan McAlevy.
Vincent attended St. Priscilla’s Catholic Grade School, and completed high school at DePaul University Academy before earning a bachelor’s degree at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa. He met and married his wife, Annette (Schiffgens) McAlevy while at St. Ambrose. Vincent then attended law school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., while also working at the U.S. Export/Import Bank. After graduating, he first worked for the General District Court for the District of Columbia, then became an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for Arlington County, Virgina. Following his work as a criminal prosecutor, he spent most of the rest of his career in private practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia. He was appointed as a judge for the Arlington County General District Court for several years during this time.
In addition to his long legal career, Vincent was very involved with his parish of St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church, Virginia, and was a member of the Edward Douglas White Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Board of Trustees of Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia for several years.
Vincent remained a proud son of Chicago, loyal to the sports teams including Da Bulls, Da Bears, Da Blackhawks and especially Da Cubs. He was also an ardent fan of his adopted home teams in D.C., including the (now) Commanders, Capitals, Wizards and especially the Nationals. He enjoyed the good fortune to see both the Cubs and Nats win a World Series in his lifetime. Finally, he was a lifelong fan of the University of Notre Dame.
While a lawyer by profession, he was a handyman by avocation, following in his father’s footsteps. There was no project he was afraid to undertake, whether involving carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring or especially auto mechanics. He built storage sheds on his and his son’s properties, and participated in the expansion of his and his son’s houses. The garage which he built was the unofficial headquarters for self-help car repairs for neighbors and friends for many years. When he was not building or repairing things, he enjoyed traveling to amusement parks to ride their most challenging roller coasters, and attending ball games in cities up and down the East Coast and Midwest.
Vincent was a man who loved to laugh and tell stories and jokes, even at his own expense. He especially loved to spend time with his grandsons and make them laugh. He will be dearly missed by all of his friends and family.
A funeral service for Vincent will be held Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St James Catholic Church, 905 Park Ave, Falls Church, VA 22046.
