She was born on December 5, 1921 in Ettrick, Chesterfield County, Virginia to the late Milton C. and Maggie Baker Brown. Predeceasing her were her husband, Gene C. Stevens, and her son, Gerald L. Stevens. She is survived by her daughter, Carla Stevens Harrison, and her husband Joseph of Bremen, Alabama; granddaughter, Courtney Mann and her husband Blake of Madison, Alabama and grandson, Justin B. Harrison of Bremen, Alabama; 3 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Makayla, and Braxton Mann of Madison, Alabama; her sister Viola B. Martin and her husband Fred in Bradenton, Florida; and 2 nieces and 3 nephews and their families.
Virginia graduated from Petersburg High School and then moved to Washington, DC in 1939. She worked as a clerk and secretary before the war. She married Gene Stevens in 1942 in Cottage City, Maryland and they moved to Champaign, Illinois due to his war-time military service assignment. After the war, they returned to Northern Virginia, first living in Arlington and then Falls Church and finally McLean. Virginia was active in her church (First Presbyterian in Arlington, Chesterbrook Presbyterian, and Lewinsville Presbyterian) and in Quilters Unlimited. She worked as a medical receptionist up until the day before she entered the hospital for her last series of illnesses in January 2016. Virginia loved to travel, especially in the Far East. She had visited every continent except Antarctica. Virginia loved working in her yard and had a gorgeous display of azaleas. She was known as an independent, hard-working, kind and loyal friend who preferred to give service than to be the recipient of such service. She showed her caring by doing. Her love was shown by her willingness to take on responsibility for other family members, even if it was not convenient or easy.
A memorial service celebrating Virginia’s life will be held at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, Virginia at 11:00am on Monday, March 7. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Virginia Stevens.
Arrangements under the direction of Murphy Falls Church Funeral Home, Falls Church, Virginia.
