Wu-Hsiung's journey began in Taiwan, where he started working in restaurants at the young age of 13. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Chih Liao. After serving in the Taiwan Marine Corps, Wu-Hsiung briefly worked in Indonesia before seizing an opportunity to move to the United States in the early 1970s.
In 1976, Wu-Hsiung was reunited with his wife Chih and their three daughters - Katherine, Jennifer, and Virginia - in Arlington, Virginia. They welcomed their son George in 1978. His career in the restaurant industry flourished as he transitioned from employee to owner. Wu-Hsiung's most notable establishment, Hunan Dynasty on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., became a popular dining spot for members of Congress.
From 1988 to 2006, Wu-Hsiung operated the New Great Wall Cafe in Centreville, Virginia, as a family business. After selling the restaurant, he briefly retired but soon found himself working at Whole Foods Market, where he contributed his expertise to their Asian specialty food offerings until February 2020.
Wu-Hsiung was known for his warm smile, insightful nature, and kindness. He was a mentor to many, helping other immigrants establish themselves in the US. His generosity, thoughtfulness, and patience were hallmarks of his character. Wu-Hsiung had a passion for photography, a love for Jeeps, and a notable sweet tooth.
In his later years, Wu-Hsiung enjoyed traveling the world on cruises with his wife Chih, going on family vacations, and spending time with his eleven grandchildren. His legacy is one of hard work, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
