

He is survived by his children, Lisa McKinney Jackson, and Scott McKinney, his daughter-in-law, Kelli McKinney, his beloved grandchildren, Summer and Tyler McKinney, a brother, Fred McKinney and sister, Joyce Dunn, his second wife, Charlotte McKinney, and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia McKinney, son-in-law, Daniel Jackson, siblings, Donald Nugen, Mary Harrington, Les McKinney, and Janet Hunt.
David was a lifelong citizen of Fayetteville. He was well-known as a football player at Fayetteville High School, but he was mainly known for his success in track. He broke the state record in the one-mile race in 1962, and he broke his own record in 1963. After high school, he was in the National Guard for 6 years.
He worked at Long-Airdox as a Material Control Manager for 39 years. In his retirement, he enjoyed watching football, helping others, and volunteering at church. He was a member of Fayetteville Christ Fellowship for many years where he was on the Board of Trustees.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, WV on Friday, May 23, 2025. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with the service to follow. He will be laid to rest in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, WV.
He ran his race with grace – and he finished strong.
