MATTHEW “SCOTTIE” CANTERBURY BECKWITH - Matthew Scott “Scottie” Canterbury, 48, of Beckwith, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 25, 2014, at his home. Scottie was born in Montgomery, WV on May 6, 1966, the ninth child of Ralph and Shirley Canterbury. Scottie graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1984, he then enlisted in the US Armed Forces. Scottie was employed with the National Park Service and enjoyed cooking for his co-workers; he was a member of Gum Spring Baptist Church, Chimney Corner. Scottie was a friend to all-he will forever be remembered for his many acts of kindness-his Saturday outings with his nephew, James, their Sunday trips to church, running countless errands for others, helping the elderly in the community-ALL done with a generous spirit, always. Scottie loved everything about the outdoors-fishing, gardening, ginsenging, snowboarding. Some of the best times he ever had were spent fishing at Hawks Nest with his brother, Jeff, and his friend, Jeff Beverly. Scottie was preceded in death by his Dad, Ralph, and his brother, Timmy. Those left to cherish many precious memories are his faithful friend and constant companion, his dog Chewey; his Mother and Dad, Shirley and Bob Hanshew of Danese; sisters: Anita Bess (Bill) of Cary, NC, Karen Bainer (Steve), Becky Wood (Bruce), Fonda Shockey (Raymond), Paula Gilliam (Luke), all of Fayetteville, Vicki Widman of Texas; brothers, Jeff Canterbury (Sandy) of Fayetteville and Gary of Florida; stepbrothers, Bobby (Sue) Hanshew of Virginia, James (Pam) Hanshew of Indiana, Willie Hanshew of Florida; step-sisters, Sissy (Woody) Woodrum of New York and Barbara Heffernan of Indiana; a very special nephew and niece – Van and Ava Wood who were the light of his life and who brought so much happiness to him-as did Scottie to them; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with his Uncle Mack Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Donations in his memory may be made to his mother, Shirley Hanshew, to help with any outstanding cost.
