Born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1942, John was the beloved son of the late James William Green and Kathryn Lee Green. He was predeceased by his siblings, Jim Green and Jo Ann Green.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, cultivating a lifelong passion for aviation. With over 25,000 flight hours, his distinguished career spanned decades with Eastern Airlines, and Aero Lloyd Airlines.
A true aviator at heart, John loved the skies and found purpose in mentoring pilots and sharing his expertise and knowledge as a Captain and Check Captain. His commitment to service extended to founding Eagle Medical Service in Gainesville, Florida, a company dedicated to supporting veterans. He was also a lifetime member of American Legion Post 236, where he forged lasting bonds with fellow veterans.
John’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 37.5 years, Gretta Green, and his cherished children: Kirsten (Brad) Smith, Kimberly Hunton, John Green Jr., Natalie (Matt) Houston, and Sean Green. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.
Those who knew John will remember his warm smile, quick wit, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched and the skies he so loved to traverse.
A celebration of John’s life will take place on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home in Flagler Beach, Florida. Family and friends are invited to gather from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by the memorial service beginning at 2:00 PM.
Fly high, John. You’ve earned your wings.
