During one of our last conversations, I shared with Kurt that my most enduring memory of him from Emerald Terrace was as a leader. Kurt was also a thinker, challenging all to think outside the box and to not settle for the mainstream. I so admired that about him. Over the years, I realized that there was a soft side to our pioneer friend. Afterall, he allowed our then 7-year-old to affectionately dub him, “Uncle Big Ears,” and to serenade the spiritual: “I’m gonna live so God can use me.” Well, God did use Kurt. He used him to challenge our minds and to touch our hearts.

More than a friend, Kurt was a brother. An instant bond was forged from high school days that could not be broken. Fast and furious we were back then, youthful and exuberant, no mountain too high, no challenge too great. If Braveheart was personified, it would be you.  It is said that people may not remember what you said, or may not even remember what you did, but they will remember how you made them feel. Thanks for all the wonderful memories my brother, some of the best days of my life, see you on the otherside. Much love to Drake, Mario and the rest of the family.

I met Kurt around late 1980s when he was still in the Marines. He’d visit me when I lived in Inglewood, CA. I’d have to feed him, as you know the food at Camp Pendleton wasn’t great! We had some good times back then. 😊

My brother from another mother! I learnt what fearless meant being around Kurt! A ride or die friend before the term ever existed! We shared a common bond and it remained unbreakable throughout the years! You lived by your terms and you chose how you wanted to go out! We had our special moments when we’d have a chat on the phone and share a 🥃! Now I’ll have to pour 🥃🥃! You may be gone from this earth but your memory will always be here with me🙏🏿👊🏿👍🏿! Kurt….as if Vaz Prep days were not enough …when I moved to New Mexico you called me “Tumbleweed” and it stuck…just as some many belly laughs and jokes we have shared throughout the years. RIP my friend from when. Until we meet again. Condolences to the family.

I miss you bad Unc, one of the dopest dudes I have ever known, always had a great time when you were around. Gonna miss our talks about sports (basketball for me, football for you), our talks about girls, our little dumb jokes, and I'm definitely gonna miss the rare times we had real talks about life.
