Maria was born on January 1, 1946, in Puerto Rico to the late Antolin and Aleja Vazquez. In 1954, as a young girl, she moved with her family stateside, where they settled in New York City.
She graduated from high school in New York and went on to earn her undergraduate degree from Herbert H. Lehman College. She later obtained a Master of Science degree in Education from Bank Street College. Maria dedicated her professional life to serving others as a Guidance Counselor with the New York City Board of Education, where she worked faithfully until her retirement. Her compassion impacted the lives of many students and families throughout her career.
After retiring, Maria relocated to Palm Coast, Florida, where she embraced the warmer climate and a slower pace of life. Her home was the center for many holidays, and family gatherings.
Maria was a devoted Catholic and an active member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church Parish. Her faith was central to her life. She found great joy in gardening, cooking for her family, and traveling—especially cherished family trips to the Caribbean. She also had a fun-loving side and was an enthusiastic fan of scary movies. She was a dog lover and enjoyed caring for her golden doodle, Rusty.
Maria is survived by her loving children, Harry, Kim, and Scott Van Utrecht; her beloved grandchildren, Claudia and Amelia Van Utrecht; her siblings, Jose Luis Vazquez, Osvaldo Vazquez, and Mercedes Vazquez Negron; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
She will be remembered for her warmth, strength, faith, and unwavering love for her family.
